Three pillars at the national level - IITs, NITs, and IIITs - are the major contributors to the success of engineering education in India. These institutions are not mere colleges but the doors leading to research, innovation and careers with high growth potential. Although research-intensive and globally ranked, IITs are complemented by NITs that offer affordable quality technical education. IIITs focus on IT and computer science-related career areas. They are the topmost engineering sources of the country united for 2026.
There are 23 Indian Institutes of Technology across India, which offer a great learning experience to engineering aspirants, which is why they are also known as India’s most prestigious engineering hubs. These institutions are offering multiple UG, PG and PhD programmes to the students. In regard to undergraduate courses in IITs they offer B.Tech, B.Arch, B.Des, and B.Tech+M.Tech (Dual Degrees), etc. In postgraduate programs they are offering, M.Tech, M.Des, M.Pharma, M.S by Research, M.Tech+PhD (Dual Degrees) etc., along with PhD-level programmes in diversified fields such as biotechnology, biomedical engineering, and many more. Top IITs includes Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kharagpur, Roorkee, and BHU provide advanced labs, multiple engineering branches, and international industry exposure. The fees are still quite reasonable (approx. INR 1 lakh per semester) and the placements are great as usual, with UG median packages ranging from INR 14-23 LPA and PG salaries going up to INR 21 LPA. Some of the companies that hire are Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Qualcomm.
National Institutes of Technology are known for their high Return on Investment (ROI) along with strong placement records among all technological and engineering colleges of India. Similarly, like IITs, NITs also offer undergraduate and postgraduate such as B.Tech and M.Tech. Candidates who need to seek admission into the UG and PG level courses in the NITs need to clear JEE Advanced with JoSAA for UG courses and GATE with CCMT counselling for PG admission for the academic year 2026. The list of top NITs includes institutes like NIT Trichy, Surathkal, Rourkela, Calicut, Warangal, VNIT Nagpur, Kurukshetra, Silchar, Raipur, and Hamirpur. These institutes give excellent results and returns on investment at a lower cost. With UG fees ranging from INR 62,500 to INR 1.25 lakh per semester and the highest offers reaching INR 40-95 LPA, NITs count as a wise decision for students who are looking for strong academics and value.
The Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) of India are known for their technology-driven and coding-centric campuses for B.Tech and M.Tech level courses in UG and PG level programmes. Likewise, IITs and NITs, IIITs also seek admission through JEE Mains, JEE Advanced, and GATE entrance examinations with further counselling rounds of JoSAA, CSAB or interviews and institute-specific tests. Top IIITs like IIIT Allahabad, ABV IIITM Gwalior, IIIT Guwahati, IIITDM Jabalpur and IIIT Pune specialise in computer science, AI, data science and ECE. Their fees vary between INR 22,500 and INR 1.2 Lakh per semester, and they have good average packages of INR 16-33 LPA. These stats make for the first preference of students who want to build a career in the technology field.
Difference Between IITs, NITs & IIITs
All 3 are top-notch engineering institutes, but clearly their goals and results are different. Where IITs are best for innovation, global placements, a more research-focused approach and hold great ranking positions in NIRF, IIRF and QS world rankings, NITs offer well-balanced engineering options with a large number of branch options. On the other hand, IIITs are the best known for tech-heavy careers in CSE, AI, ML, ECE, and software domains. In short, IITs lead in research prestige, NITs win on value and affordability, and IIITs specialise in futuristic digital technologies, together defining India’s engineering excellence in 2026. Refer to the table below to know the basic differences between IITs, NITs and IIITs:

National Institute of Technology: Regional Engineering Colleges
In the year 1959, the very first REC was established in Warnagal, the foundation stone laid by the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Afterwards, in the 1960s, several RECs were established to provide quality education in the fields of science, technology and engineering. From their inception till now, they have showcased academic excellence and robust placement outcomes, which is why the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) upgraded 17 RECs into the National Institute of Technology (NITs) in the year 2003. They also got funding from the central government. NITs are declared as the Institutions of National importance due to their quality education and great placement records after IITs in India.
In recent times, there are a total of 20 NITs that are functional, offering Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees in technology, engineering and science. Apart from these oldest institutions, the Government of India sanctioned 10 new NITs as well to empower the education system and offer more opportunities to the science, technology and engineering students in the near future. Due to their great learning environment and placement records in past years, NITs are performing well in NIRF and IIRF rankings consistently. NIT Tiruchirappalli, NIT Rourkela, NITK Surathkal, and NIT Calicut remain among the highest-ranked institutes, consistently attracting top recruiters and offering diverse engineering specialisations. While NIRF highlights student placement numbers and overall academic performance, IIRF focuses on placement performance and industry engagement. Institutes like NIT Warangal, VNIT Nagpur, and NIT Hamirpur demonstrate steady growth in placement metrics, reinforcing their relevance. These rankings collectively underline that the leading NITs provide not only quality education but also strong career pathways, making them preferred choices for engineering aspirants across India.
The NIRF 2025 rankings of the top-ranked NITs in India show their academic excellence and the overall strong placement of students. The 2025 editions of the rankings present a varied picture vis-à-vis 2024, as multiple institutes have moved up in the ranking ladder and at the same time continue to offer excellent career prospects to their students.
Key Highlights:
NIT Trichy retains its heritage by being ranked 9th in 2025. Although there was a slight decrease in the number of students placed, which went down to 791, the institute is still among the most preferred ones for the aspirants.
NIT Rourkela has transformed itself and is now ranked 13th as compared to 19th last year. The number of students placed has gone up to 821, which is a true reflection of a strong placement ecosystem.
NITK Surathkal is stable with the 17th position, and the number of students placed is 756, whereas NIT Calicut has been able to make a comeback to the twenties and is now ranked 21st with 799 students placed.
NIT Warangal is ranked 28th with 650 placements and thus has gone down a few steps in the ladder. Similarly, the number of students placed at VNIT Nagpur and NIT Silchar are 575 and 520 respectively, hence both the institutes have also experienced a drop in their rankings.
Besides these, NIT Kurukshetra and NIT Raipur as well as NIT Hamirpur are offering good opportunities to students of their colleges even though their rankings are not that high.

Scholarships in Top NITs and Eligibility Criteria for Students
Major Indian NITs have developed a complete scholarship system that aims to help students from different economic and social backgrounds. These scholarships merge the schemes of the central and state governments, the programs of the institute, and the awards funded by the corporate or alumni, thus creating a seamless way for the students to avail themselves of quality education, research, and professional development.
These initiatives are available to students at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels and include financial support for the payment of the fees, the accommodation, and the purchase of research materials. Apart from that, several institutes provide merit-cum-means scholarships, post-matric support for SC or ST students, Top-Class Education Scholarships, and global fellowship grants, thereby making the financial aid network strong and comprehensive. Normally, the requirements for eligibility are regulated by income caps, results in studies, criteria based on categories, and conditions of domicile so that aids are given to the most deserving applicants.
