The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur was established by an Act of Parliament in 1960. The Institute has been ranked 49th by the NIRF ranking in the Engineering Category.
The Institute is recognised for offering programs in B.Tech, MCA, MSc, MBA, M.Tech, and PhD. The B.Tech and M.Tech programs are offered in various specialisations, including Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and others. Admission to these courses is based either on merit or entrance exam scores.

NIT Durgapur offers courses such as B.Tech in different specialisations, a Dual Degree course, M.Tech & Multidisciplinary M.Tech and other courses such as MSc, MSW, Integrated M.Sc, and MBA.
Currently, the National Institute of Technology Durgapur course admissions are closed and are expected to reopen in August 2026. Candidates who seek admission can apply directly through the official website.
Admission to the B.Tech program is based on JEE Main rank, followed by JoSAA and CSAB counselling. On the other hand, a GATE score is required for M.Tech admission.
For courses like M.Sc, students are required to participate in IIT JAM + CCMN counselling, and for the MBA course, students must have a valid score in any of the following management exams, such as MAT, XAT, CAT, or CMAT. Selection to the MBA program is based on the Written Ability Test, Group Discussion, and Personal Interview.

The Institute offers several courses, and the eligibility criteria might differ, depending on the course. If the candidate fulfils the criteria of their chosen course, they can apply for it.
For the B.Tech course, candidates must have completed their Class 12th with a minimum of 75% marks. They also need to qualify for the JEE Main exam and appear for the JoSAA or CSAB counselling.
Candidates applying for the M.Tech course should have passed class 12th with 60% marks (55% marks for the reserved category)or have a 6.5 CGPA. They also need to graduate with a B.Tech in a relevant discipline, appear for the GATE exam and CCMT counselling.
For the M.Sc course, candidates should have passed a B.Sc in the relevant stream with a minimum of 60% marks (55% for reserved categories) or 6.0 CGPA for SC/ST candidates. They also need to appear for the IIT JAM exam and then the CCMN counselling.
For the MBA course, candidates should have a minimum of 55% (50% for the reserved categories) or a 6.0 CGPA. Additionally, they need to appear for any of the entrance exams such as MAT, XAT, CAT, or CMAT. Students also need to appear for the Written Ability Test, Group Discussion, and Personal Interview.
For the MSW course, candidates should have qualified in the BSW course from a recognised university with at least 50% marks.
The placement cell at the Institute works as a bridge between the companies/ recruiters and students. It helps organise pre-placement talks, placement drives, and also takes care of the accommodation of the representatives of the companies participating in the drive.
Additionally, the Institute has a placement rate of 82% and more than 210+ companies visited the campus. The highest package offered to the students was INR 80 LPA, while the average salary package was INR 12.61 LPA. Some of the top recruiters who have taken part in the placement drive are Deloitte, JSW, Accenture, Apple, Salesforce, Hero, Reliance, Adobe, Oracle, Samsung Research, and more.
