The IIT Kharagpur admission process for different UG courses has started with the opening of the JEE Mains application process. In the case of the B.Tech program, students are required to have passed their Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. After that, these students are required to appear for the JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams. JEE Main Session 1 registration has started and is scheduled to be closed on November 27, 2025. The session 1 examination will be conducted from January 21 to 30, 2026. Getting a rank in the JEE Advanced is a mandatory requirement for students who want to appear for the B.Tech program of IIT Kharagpur.
On the other hand, candidates applying for M.Tech courses should hold a bachelor's degree in the field of engineering or technology and then they are required to take GATE 2026. The examination is scheduled to be held on February 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2026. Besides, if a student has a CGPA of more than 8.0 at IIT, then they can go for direct admission without GATE.
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) course is offered in IIT Kharagpur through its Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSM). The students who are looking to take admission into it are required to have cleared the CAT 2025 exam. After this, the students will have to apply to the institute, and then the institute will call them for interviews to make the final selection.
For PhD admissions, the eligibility criteria usually include a master's degree in engineering, science, or humanities. The selection process includes qualifying for one of the GATE, NET, or other national-level exams, followed by an interview conducted by the institute.
For admission into the Integrated MSc-PhD program, the IIT JAM 2026 exam (Joint Entrance Test for Masters) is conducted. A valid and decent score in GATE 2026 is required by the candidates seeking admission into the M.Tech courses of IIT Kharagpur. Once the candidates fulfil this requirement, they need to take the next step, which is to take part in the counselling process. Candidates can register themselves for the counselling on COAP, and further, they need to appear at the designated centre. Candidates who have completed their Bachelorβs or B.Tech. A degree from IIT itself, then they do not need to appear in the GATE 2026. These kinds of candidates are eligible for direct admission into the M.Tech courses at IITs. Among the various prizes, medals and awards given by them, the main ones are the President of India Gold Medal, Prime Ministerβs Gold Medal, and a number of memorial awards. Institute Silver Medals given by the institute also honour the best performers throughout the programs, thereby encouraging the values of merit and all-around development among the graduating ββββββββββββββββstudents. The general criteria to be eligible for the students are given below.
Must secure a minimum CGPA of 8.35 in the relevant semester.
Must have passed all prescribed subjects, including additional ones, without any failures.
No disciplinary action should have been taken at any stage.
Must not be involved in examination malpractice or violation of the instituteβs code of conduct.

4 | Dr. Jnan Chandra Ghosh Memorial Gold Medal | Awarded to the best all-rounder among Dual Degree and 5-year Integrated M.Sc. students, with weightage: academics (40%), departmental activities (10%), hall activities (20%), Gymkhana performance (30%). |
5 | Prof. J. C. Bose Memorial Gold Medal | Awarded to the academically best student securing the highest CGPA at the end of the 4th semester among 2-year M.Sc. courses in Science Departments. |
6 | Chairman Board of Governors Gold Medal | Awarded to the best all-rounder outgoing UG disabled student (B.Tech., B.Arch., Dual Degree, 2-year & 5-year M.Sc.), with weightage: academics (80%) and extra-academic activities (20%). Minimum CGPA required: 8.0. |
