IIT Kharagpur Admission 2026
The IIT Kharagpur admission process for different UG courses has started with the opening of the JEE Mains application process. In the case of the B.Tech program, students are required to have passed their Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. After that, these students are required to appear for the JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams. JEE Main Session 1 registration has started and is scheduled to be closed on November 27, 2025. The session 1 examination will be conducted from January 21 to 30, 2026. Getting a rank in the JEE Advanced is a mandatory requirement for students who want to appear for the B.Tech program of IIT Kharagpur.
On the other hand, candidates applying for M.Tech courses should hold a bachelor's degree in the field of engineering or technology and then they are required to take GATE 2026. The examination is scheduled to be held on February 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2026. Besides, if a student has a CGPA of more than 8.0 at IIT, then they can go for direct admission without GATE.
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) course is offered in IIT Kharagpur through its Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSM). The students who are looking to take admission into it are required to have cleared the CAT 2025 exam. After this, the students will have to apply to the institute, and then the institute will call them for interviews to make the final selection.
For PhD admissions, the eligibility criteria usually include a master's degree in engineering, science, or humanities. The selection process includes qualifying for one of the GATE, NET, or other national-level exams, followed by an interview conducted by the institute.
For admission into the Integrated MSc-PhD program, the IIT JAM 2026 exam (Joint Entrance Test for Masters) is conducted. For IIT JAM 2026, the admit card will be available from January 5, 2026, and the exam will be held on February 15, 2026 (Sunday). IIT Kharagpur B.Tech Admission 2026 is normally based on the performance of candidates in JEE Main and JEE Advanced. The online registration for JEE Main 2026 was opened from October 31 to November 27, 2025. The first session exam will be held from January 21 to January 30, 2026. The second session exam will be in April from 2-9 April 2025. The official dates have not been announced yet, but JEE Advanced 2026 will tentatively occur in May 2026. IIT Kharagpur Admission Eligibility Criteria 2026
IIT Kharagpur admission 2026 has different criteria for both UG and PG programs. For bachelor's courses like B.Tech, B.S., and integrated degrees, students must clear entrance exams such as JEE Mains along with the JEE Advanced. For B. Arch. programmes the candidates will have to clear the JEE Advanced along with the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT). In addition to that, they also need a minimum mark in their school exams based on their category. For PG courses like M.Tech, M.Sc., MBA, or LL.B., admission depends on exams like GATE, JAM, or CAT. The detailed eligibility criteria for different courses are mentioned below.
UG Admission Eligibility Criteria (B.Tech, B.Arch, B.S., Integrated Courses)
The entry to the intensive undergraduate program at IIT Kharagpur through the B.Tech, B.Arch, B.S. (Bachelor of Science), and Integrated courses is determined solely by the JEE Advanced rank. To be eligible to take part in the JEE Advanced, students must qualify for the JEE Mains exams. Candidates must have passed their Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics with a minimum of 75% marks. There is also some relaxation in the qualifying marks for the reserved category students, depending on the category they belong to. The admission process is completed through JoSAA counselling, which normally starts after the declaration of the JEE Advanced 2026 result. The opening and closing ranks of the B.Tech. The Computer Science and Engineering branch normally starts around 230 and closes at 430, suggesting strong demand for the stream among the students.
Entrance Exams Accepted for UG Courses
If a student wants to get admitted to the undergraduate programs at IIT Kharagpur, then they will have to follow a set admission procedure. The admission in B.Tech, B.S., and Dual Degree is based on the performance in JEE Main and JEE Advanced, followed by the counselling through JoSAA.

To get admission to Postgraduate programs, candidates usually need to hold a relevant Bachelor's degree and achieve a qualifying score in the required national-level entrance exam. Below are the detailed course-wise admission criteria of different PG programmes offered by IIT Kharagpur.
M.Tech Programme Eligibility Criteria
A valid and decent score in GATE 2026 is required by the candidates seeking admission into the M.Tech courses of IIT Kharagpur. Once the candidates fulfil this requirement, they need to take the next step, which is to take part in the counselling process. Candidates can register themselves for the counselling on COAP, and further, they need to appear at the designated centre. Candidates who have completed their Bachelor’s or B.Tech. A degree from IIT itself, then they do not need to appear in the GATE 2026. These kinds of candidates are eligible for direct admission into the M.Tech courses at IITs. IIT Kharagpur does not have any age restriction to take admission into its flagship course, M.Tech.
In relation to minimum marks, candidates coming from General, EWS, and OBC-NCL (OBC non-creamy layer) categories should have at least 60% of the marks or a CGPA of 6.5. Similarly, categories like SC, ST, and PwD require 55 per cent of the marks or a CGPA of 6.0 to be eligible for admission into M.Tech. For direct admissions, IIT B.Tech graduates need at least 8.0 CGPA or above.

MBA Programme Eligibility Criteria
Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM), IIT Kharagpur, offers an MBA program consisting of a two-year full-time residential course that admits students mainly based on CAT scores. IIT Kharagpur LL.M. Eligibility Criteria (RGSOIPL)
IIT Kharagpur law program admission requires a First Class LL.B./B.L. degree from a university recognised by the government. In addition to that the candidates must secure at least 60% of the total marks or a CGPA of 6.5/10 for General/EWS/OBC categories, whereas SC/ST/PwD applicants need 55% or 6.0/10. The admission process to Ph.D. at IIT Kharagpur in 2026 is well-defined and different entrance exams are conducted for different departments. IIT Kharagpur Prize, Medals & Awards
Among the various prizes, medals and awards given by them, the main ones are the President of India Gold Medal, Prime Minister’s Gold Medal, and a number of memorial awards. Institute Silver Medals given by the institute also honour the best performers throughout the programs, thereby encouraging the values of merit and all-around development among the graduating students. The general criteria to be eligible for the students are given below.
Eligibility Criteria
Must secure a minimum CGPA of 8.35 in the relevant semester.
Must have passed all prescribed subjects, including additional ones, without any failures.
No disciplinary action should have been taken at any stage.
Must not be involved in examination malpractice or violation of the institute’s code of conduct.
