Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar was established in 2008. It is one of the eight new IITs announced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. IIT Gandhinagar address palaj, gandhinagar, gujarat-382055. Academic work started at a temporary campus in VGEC Chandkheda. IIT Bombay provided mentorship during the initial years. The institute later moved to its permanent campus at Palaj, Gandhinagar, on the banks of the Sabarmati River.
IIT Gandhinagar is ranked 25th in the NIRF Rankings 2025. It has held IIT status since its beginning. Formal inclusion under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act was completed by 2012. Academic activities at the permanent campus began in 2015. The IIT Gandhinagar campus area in acres is around 400 acres, located along the banks of the Sabarmati River. IIT Gandhinagar offers multiple courses in undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programs for every eligible student. They need a valid GATE score at the time of the interview or written test to be eligible. However, final-year B.Tech students from IITs with a minimum CGPA of 6.0 at the end of their third year and from NITs with a CGPA of 8.0 (general) or 7.5 (reserved categories) can apply through a special Early Admit M.Tech program without a GATE score. Admission is based on academic performance, written tests, and interviews, with due relaxation for reserved categories.
For M.Sc. Admissions
candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering related to the field of study, and typically qualify through IIT JAM or equivalent national exams. The institute emphasises a strong academic background relevant to the chosen specialisation. Shortlisted candidates may be called for interviews or additional assessments. Minimum eligibility usually involves a Bachelor’s degree with at least 55% marks or equivalent in the relevant discipline, with relaxations for reserved categories.
For PhD Admissions
IIT Gandhinagar for 2026 requires candidates to have a minimum of 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/PwD categories) or a CPI of 5.5 (5.0 for SC/ST/PwD) in a postgraduate degree or a 4-year bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline. Department-specific requirements vary and may demand higher cutoffs depending on the area of research. Candidates with a B.Tech degree from Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) with a CPI of at least 8.0 are also eligible. For select programs, candidates with MSc, MA, BS, or integrated BS-MS degrees from IITs or IISc with prescribed minimum CPI scores are eligible as well.
IIT Gandhinagar also offers a "Start Early PhD" program for final-year B.Tech/BS/Integrated MSc students from IITs and NITs with a CPI of not less than 6.0 (IITs/IISc) or 8.0 (NITs/IISERs) at the end of their pre-final/third year. This program does not require a GATE score, though having one can enhance stipend eligibility.

Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar Important Dates for B.Tech
The JEE Advanced exam for 2026, the exam is in May, around. The students will be able to download their admit cards in the second week of May. The results will come out by the first week of June. Before taking JEE Advanced, students must first pass the JEE Main exam, which will be held twice in 2026 – once in January and then from April. The results of JEE Main are usually announced soon after each exam session. This schedule gives students enough time to prepare and take both exams properly.

The GATE exam is an important test for admission to postgraduate engineering programs. IIT Gandhinagar Placement Career Development Services reached out to about 2,000 companies, which is 358 more than last year. Because of this, placements improved in every way. Students received 203 job offers in total, and around 71% got at least one offer. Postgraduate students did better than before—MTech placement went up from 71% to 78%, and MSc from 38% to 51%. For undergraduate students, placements dropped from 92% to 81%. Salary packages also increased this year.
The average and median salaries for UG students grew by about 25%, and the overall average increased by 28%. Like before, most offers (around 68%) came from core sectors.
