Students who want to appear for IIT JEE Advanced 2026 exam must check the eligibility criteria and make sure that they meet all the requirements before applying. The eligibility criteria include educational qualifications, minimum marks in JEE Main and age limit for JEE Advanced 2026. Candidates can go through the detailed JEE Advanced 2026 eligibility criteria mentioned below:
JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria for Indian Nationals and OCI/PIO
JEE Rank: Candidates must rank among the top 2.5 lakh qualifiers (across all categories) in the JEE Main 2026 B.E./B.Tech paper. Shortlisting follows these percentages: GEN-EWS 10%, OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5% and OPEN 40.5%; each category includes 5% horizontal PwD reservation.
Minimum age: Born after September 30, 2001. SC/ST/PwD relaxed to after September 30, 1996.
Attempts Allowed: Candidates may take JEE (Advanced) at most twice, in two successive years.
Class 12 (or equivalent) must be first attempted in 2025 or 2026 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics compulsory; 2024 or earlier first attempts are ineligible regardless of subjects. "Appearance" refers to the board declaring results that year, even without exams or with withheld results. 2024 candidates qualify only if their board announced results on or after June 18, 2024 and meet other criteria; pre-June 18 declarations disqualify even withheld cases.
No admission to IIT programs under JoSAA 2025 rules, even if the candidate stayed or reported online/at the centre. Admission cancelled after joining? Not allowed. First 2025 IIT prep course admission? Allowed. JoSAA 2025 seat offered but no report, withdrew before final round or cancelled before final IIT round? Allowed, if other criteria (A1-A4) are met.
JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria for Foreign Candidates and OCI/PIO(F)
Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO (F) candidates register directly without JEE Main. They compete for supernumerary seats, up to 10% of each IIT program's capacity, based on the OPEN category closing rank. No reservations apply to these candidates and they need identity documents, including a passport, OCI/PIO card or citizenship certificate.
Age Limit: Candidates must have been born on or after October 1, 2001. Countries requiring mandatory armed forces or allied service before or after Class 12 receive age relaxation matching the service duration. Submit a certificate from the competent authority during registration.
Number of Attempts: Candidates can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times over two consecutive years.
Class XII Appearance: The first Class XII (or equivalent) exam must occur in 2025 or 2026, including Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. First attempts in 2024 or earlier disqualify candidates, regardless of subjects taken. Countries mandating post-Class XII armed forces service qualify for an appearance year relaxation, with proof uploaded at registration. "Appearance" follows the same definition as for Indian nationals, including the 2024 board result exception.
Prior IIT Admission: Candidates must not have joined an IIT program under JoSAA 2025 Business Rules, whether they continued or reported online/at a centre. Admissions cancelled after joining are disqualified. First-time admission to an IIT preparatory course in 2025 permits eligibility. Candidates allocated JoSAA 2025 seats who did not report, withdrew before the final round, or had seats cancelled before the final IIT allotment round remain eligible, provided the above criteria are satisfied.
