The West Bengal Medical Counselling Committee has put the admission for the MBBS and Bachelor of Dental Surgery programs on hold, as the counseling process is suspended. This announcement followed shortly after the revised provisional merit list for the 85% state quota seats was released. This sudden halt has put over 11000 candidates in a state of uncertainty

The official notice was published on 18 August 2025 on the official website of WBMCC, and it stated that the WB NEET UG 2025 counseling/admission process will be ‘in abeyance till further order.’ Consequently, the results for the round 1 seat allotment, which was scheduled to be released on 20 August 2025, also stand canceled.

Reactions To The WB NEET UG 2025 Counseling Suspension

The move has drawn widespread criticism from Sukanta Majumdar, who is the Union Minister of State for Education and Development of the North Eastern Region. He has been critical of the action and accused the West Bengal government of suspending the process without stating a proper reason.

On the social media platform X, Majumdar wrote that the Government of West Bengal has suspended the NEET UG Medical and Dental counseling process abruptly by referring to an 'Urgent Notice' without providing any credible reason. He further stated that this sudden halt has left the future of medical students in the dark and questioned the reasons for this suspension, speculating it could be politically motivated.

Through the social media post, Sukanta Majumdar questioned the reason behind the sudden admission suspension once it had commenced, and whether it is yet another case of politicizing the system by granting favors in the name of reservation. This abrupt decision to suspend the admission and counseling process has raised concerns among students and parents. Everyone is now left anxiously waiting for clarity from the authorities.

High Court Intervention

Earlier, the Calcutta High Court had suspended the state's recruitment and admission process over differences about the OBC reservation policy. The court then granted permission for the process to continue, instructing the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB) to release a fresh merit list by August 22.

Following this order, WBMCC came out with a fresh merit list on August 16 and had scheduled to release the results of round one seat allotment on August 20, post 4 PM. The students were scheduled to report from August 21 to 23. But with the recent notice of suspension, this new schedule has now become obsolete.
