IIT Madras Launches New BSc in Management and Data Science Programme: Class 12, Diploma Holders Can Apply

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has decided to start an interdisciplinary undergraduate programme titled a Bachelor of Science in Management and Data Science. This programme, which will be offered through the Department of Management Studies (DoMS), IIT Madras, aims to be a bridge to connect management education with data-driven analytical capabilities.

This new launched programme is carefully designed to integrate management ideas with analytical and quantitative techniques. It is aimed at enhancing the students' skills in making business decisions, solving problems based on data, and applying quantitative reasoning. Graduates of the programme will be awarded a Bachelor of Science degree by IIT Madras, which holds the same academic level and recognition as other degrees given by the Institute.

Admissions, Learning Support and Industry Engagement

The admissions process, mode of learning, placement, and career guidance will be managed by the Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE) at IIT Madras. Moreover, the Institute is partnering with industry players to provide internships and project-based learning opportunities. This helps students to get practical exposure to the industry and will be more competent for the job market, as revealed in an official statement.

Batch Commencement and Application Deadline

Through this programme, IIT Madras desires to prepare practitioners who will be instrumental in leading data-driven transformation in various sectors. The graduates will have several industries to choose from for their career opportunities, such as manufacturing, construction, banking and financial services, IT and IT-enabled services, e-commerce, consulting, healthcare and policy-making organizations. Besides this, the programme also equips graduates with the capability to pursue further academic studies, research and entrepreneurial ventures.

At the launch event, IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti said that the programme was in line with the Institute's mission of equipping students with leadership skills for a data-centric global scenario. He advocated for the fusion of management education with advanced analytical training to be a source of power for the next generation of leaders who will be capable of making well-informed and ethically sound decisions in any industry while also ensuring scalability and broader reach.

Hybrid Learning Model and Assessment Structure

The new major in Management and Data Science at the undergraduate level will be based on a hybrid mode of learning. The learning will be allowed through video lectures recorded by IIT Madras professors. Alongside the video lectures, live online discussions on case studies, tutorials, and continuous academic support through online forums will be provided. Depending on the course requirements, examinations may be held on Sundays at centres across India or online with remote proctoring.

Admission and Eligibility Criteria

The programme is open to candidates who have completed Class 12 or an equivalent qualification, including diploma holders. No age limit restrictions have been set, and the number of seats is not limited. Students have the flexibility to study the programme as a standalone degree, along with another academic programme, or even while they are employed. Admission to the programme will be made through an internal qualifier or eligibility to take the JEE Advanced exam, thus opening several avenues for aspirants.
