Recently, AIIMS Jammu, in collaboration with the University of Michigan, organized two major international events: a conference entitled "Care of the Critically Injured" and a symposium entitled "Innovations in Lung Cancer Research and Precision Oncology". Experts presented on the latest advances in trauma care, critical care training, the role of AI in healthcare, and personalized care in cancer treatment. These events provide a glimpse of how AIIMS Jammu values patient care, innovation, and international exchange.
New Ideas in Cancer Treatment Highlights
The Department of Radiation Oncology organized the "Innovations in Lung Cancer Research and Precision Oncology" symposium, which demonstrated considerable impact. Expert oncologists and researchers convened for three days to engage in meaningful conversation regarding the progress in personalized medicine and thoracic oncology.
To that end, among the expert panels, Dr. Nithya Ramnath, professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan, talked about what is new in immunotherapy and lung cancer therapy. Dr. Shruti Jolly, professor and associate chair, radiation oncology, discussed what is new with continuing advancements in radiation therapy treatment and quality assurance with MROQC. Dr. Chandan Kumar Sinha, Associate Research Scientist, MCTP, discussed genomic profiling and what seems to be a downslope trend in utilizing this in advanced customized cancer trials, with an emphasis on genomic profiling.
To cover the range of topics, the symposium concluded with an interesting panel discussion on AI in lung cancer research. The panel engaged in a discussion on the role of AI in diagnosis, treatment planning, and the potential for institutional collaboration moving forward.
Conference on Care of the Critically Injured
AIIMS Jammu organized an international conference titled "Care of the Critically Injured" on November 11–12, which was designed to enhance India's trauma & critical care systems. Esteemed speakers included Dr. Ross Blank (University of Michigan), Dr. Ajai Malhotra (University of Vermont), and Dr. Krishnan Raghavendran (University of Michigan). The conference session topics revolved around the development of trauma systems, the significance of trauma centers, and hands-on training in managing ARDS and mechanical ventilation.
According to Prof. (Dr.) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, said, "Collaborations with international organizations such as the University of Michigan are crucial to improving clinical skills, research, and international collaborations." "This collaboration underlines our pledge for quality, innovation, and patient-centered care," he shared.
Strengthening Future Global Partnerships
Prof. Krishnan Raghavendran visited AIIMS Jammu earlier this year and praised the Institute's digital health initiatives, Next Generation Sequencing Lab, and quick progress since the start of OPD services in August 2024. He indicated a desire to expand international partnerships and share Michigan's cutting-edge medical procedures.
A positive step toward raising the bar for medical innovation and global healthcare standards has been taken with the two institutions' agreement to investigate collaborations in clinical care, academics, and research.
