The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has officially released the schedule for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027 and introduced a new paper on Robotics and Automation (RA). The GATE syllabus has also been updated for the first time in five years by IIT Madras. The changes have been made to keep the exam in line with the latest developments in engineering and industry.
GATE 2027 will be held on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027, in two shifts each day. The GATE 2027 online registration process will begin on 14 August 2026. Candidates will be able to apply online through the official GATE website. The exam will be conducted in a computer-based format and students will be allowed to appear for one or two papers based on the approved paper combinations.

GATE 2027 Key Updates: New Robotics & Automation Paper Added, Syllabus Revised
According to the latest update, IIT Madras has introduced a new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper for the GATE 2027 exam. This new paper has been added to meet the growing demand for skills in the fields of robotics, automation and smart technology.
Apart from this, the institute has also revised the GATE syllabus after five years. The changes have been made to keep the exam aligned with the latest developments in engineering education and industry needs.
Moreover, the Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) paper has been merged with the Engineering Sciences (XE) paper. The students who choose XE will now also find 'Textile Engineering and Fibre Science' among the available sections.
These updates are expected to give students more opportunities to explore new-age engineering fields and prepare themselves as per the changing career requirements.
GATE 2027 Exam Eligibility Criteria and Registration Portal Opens on August 14
To be eligible, Candidates who have completed or are currently in the final year of their bachelor’s degree in engineering, technology, architecture, science, arts or commerce can apply. There is no age limit to appear for the GATE 2027 Exam. Third-year BTech students are also eligible to appear for the exam as per the revised eligibility rules.
The GATE 2027 registration process will begin on August 14 through the official application portal. The registration process requires candidate need to complete the online form, upload the required documents, verify their identity through DigiLocker and pay the application fee to complete the registration process.
All the students are also advised to keep all their important documents such as educational certificates, ID proof, photograph and signature ready before applying to ensure a smooth registration process.
