The National Medical Commission (NMC) has given the green signal to 4,201 additional postgraduate medical seats in private medical colleges in India in Broad Specialities for the academic year 2025-26, thereby considerably enhancing medical education after graduation in the country. This approval, communicated through the notification of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), has substantially increased the postgraduate training capacity in the private sector.
As a result of this new increment, the total number of postgraduate seats in private medical colleges has gone up from 3123 to 7324, thus, it is one of the largest expansions in recent years.
NMC Issues Updated Seat Matrix
The MARB notification confirms that the consolidated list of newly approved and enhanced PG seats has been uploaded for stakeholders, including institutions, counselling authorities, students, and parents. In a parallel circular, the NMC Director urged all concerned to refer to the updated seat matrix, emphasising that the newly sanctioned seats fall exclusively under the Broad Specialities (BS) category for the upcoming academic session.
Importantly, MARB clarified that while Letters of Permission (LOPs) for the additional seats are still under process, counselling authorities need not wait for the LOPs. The list uploaded on the NMC website will be treated as a valid and sufficient document for the NEET PG 2025 counselling process.
Speciality-Wise Expansion
A number of major clinical specialities have seen substantial increases in seat availability. The largest expansions include:
Specialty | New Seats |
MS Orthopaedics | 355 |
MD Anaesthesiology | 318 |
MD Radio Diagnosis | 314 |
MD General Medicine | 283 |
MS Obstetrics & Gynaecology | 282 |
MD Paediatrics | 296 |
MD Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy | 240 |

MS General Surgery | 251 |
Smaller increments were seen in niche areas, including:
MD Family Medicine - 2 seats
MD Hospital Administration - 4 seats
MD Nuclear Medicine - 8 seats
MD Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation - 7 seats
Such balanced growth of the different areas is anticipated to have a positive impact on the entire clinical and administrative specialities network, which forms the healthcare ecosystem in India.
State-Wise Distribution of Newly Approved Seats
The sanctions mirror the diffused allocation of the same throughout the states. Some of them are experiencing a significant increase, while others are getting a slight raise.

The NMC stated that these approvals are a continuation of the previous permissions given to the government and deemed universities and are consistent with the national objective of increasing the capacity of postgraduate medical education.
