More Medical Seats Coming Soon: NMC Plans to Add 8,000 UG and PG Seats This Year

Good news for students aspiring to take medical studies further and become doctors. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced that India is likely to get around 8,000 new medical seats this year, 2025. These seats will be added to both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) medical programs across India. 

Dr. Abhijat Sheth, the NMC Chief, shared that the decision to increase these seats is based on the number of applications received from medical colleges. The NMC is currently inspecting these colleges to make sure they meet the required standards. Once the inspections are complete, the new seats will be added to the official count.

Present Medical Seats In India 

Currently, India has 1,18,098 undergraduate medical seats, with nearly half located in government colleges and the rest in private institutions. For PG courses, there are 53,960 seats, divided between government and private institutions. 

Earlier this year, there were concerns that the number of seats might drop due to a CBI investigation about the irregularities. This involved some officials and private colleges. Because of this, the NMC had paused approvals for new seats and courses. But now, with inspections back on track, the seat count is expected to rise again.

NEET PG Counselling 2025 Starting Soon 

NEET PG counselling will begin in September, and the new seats will be included in that process. For NEET UG, the first round of counselling is already done, and the second round is expected to start by 25 August 2025.

Students should keep checking the official counselling websites for updates. More seats mean more chances for students to get into medical colleges, especially in popular courses like MBBS, MD, and MS.
