The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 275 additional MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) seats in government medical colleges across Andhra Pradesh, Goa and Jammu & Kashmir for the 2026–27 academic session. This increase in the number of seats is expected to help students who are appearing for NEET UG Counselling 2026, as they will now have more opportunities to get admission to government medical colleges.
The approval is part of the government’s efforts to expand medical education and increase the number of doctors within the country. As more MBBS seats are being added, NEET-qualified candidates will have better chances of getting admission to government medical colleges. Many students prefer government colleges to complete their medical education because of their affordable fee structure, quality education and other benefits available to them. Andhra Pradesh has received the highest number of additional seats. However, government medical colleges in Goa and Jammu & Kashmir have also been given permission to increase their MBBS intake from the upcoming academic session.
State-Wise Distribution of the 275 Newly Approved MBBS Seats
These 275 seats have been distributed across three states. The approval for these additional seats has been given by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the National Medical Commission under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019. Below are the details of these seats presented for students.
Out of the total 275 approved MBBS seats, Andhra Pradesh has received the highest share with 175 seats. These seats have been allocated to two government medical colleges in the state. Piduguralla Government Medical College has received approval for 100 new MBBS seats, while the Siddhartha Government Medical College in Vijayawada has been allotted 75 seats.
In Goa, the National Medical Commission has approved an additional 50 MBBS seats for Goa Medical College. The approval will help the college to increase its annual MBBS seats intake from 200 to now 250 students for the 2026 academic session. This will create more opportunities for the medical aspirants.
Meanwhile, Government Medical College Jammu in Jammu & Kashmir has also been given approval for 50 more MBBS seats by NMC. The college will be able to admit more students every year from the 2026-27 academic year. This has increased the number of opportunities for medical education in the region.
NEET Counselling 2026: Expected Start Date and Details
NEET UG Counselling 2026 is likely to start soon after the announcement of NEET 2026 results. The counselling process is expected to begin from the first week of August 2026. The admission process will be conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) along with other state counselling authorities. Seats will be allotted to candidates based on their NEET 2026 scores and ranks.
