The National Testing Agency (NTA) is set to use facial recognition along with live photo verification for students appearing in NEET, UG and JEE Main from the year 2026. With this new system, the exam registration process as well as identity checks at exam centres will be different. Students will not be allowed to upload a passport-sized photo while filling out the application form; they are required to take a live photo using a mobile phone or a webcam at the time of registration. This photo will be clicked there and then and will be directly linked with the student's application details.

Aim of Introducing Facial Recognition System

Facial recognition technology will also be implemented in the examination centres. The live picture clicked at the time of registration will be matched with the person in front of the camera standing at the entry gates to the exam hall. This verification, along with the use of the admit card and a valid ID proof, will ensure that impersonation is completely prevented.

JEE Main 2026 to Apply the System First

The new verification system is expected to begin with JEE Mains 2026, starting with the January examination. This would be followed by NEET-UG 2026 and other NTA-held exams. This technology has already been implemented on a small scale in previous exams.

Aadhaar Photo Updation Required

The students may require verification of their Aadhaar photo, which matches their current appearance. If a mismatch exists between Aadhaar records and a live photo, it may cause trouble during verification. It is assumed that NTA will publish complete information on how to initiate the registration process.

What the New Rules Mean for Exam Applicants

Examinations would be more secure and dependable if facial recognition were implemented as a means of identification. While students might initially be unfamiliar with the extra verification steps, the system aims to reduce the occurrence of unfair practices and protect the innocent candidates. Following many rehearsals, NTA is likely to roll out the system for all primary competitive examinations starting next year, thus it will be a significant change in the examination culture in India.
