The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar has moved significantly in the direction of holistic education and inclusive growth with the foundation, laying of the Centre for Yogic Sciences and Holistic Development as well as the introduction of a new scholarship scheme for students from economically weaker sections.
The foundation stone ceremony was held on Tuesday at the IIT Ropar campus. The centre has been named the Dr Ishan Avdhoot Shivanand Centre for Yogic Sciences and Holistic Development, after Dr Ishan Shivanand, founder of Yoga of Immortals, who was present at the event. The ceremony was presided over by IIT Ropar Director Prof. Rajeev Ahuja and attended by Dr Atharva Poundarik, Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and renowned cardiologist Dr Bindukumar Kansupada.
Blending Ancient Yoga with Modern Science
The upcoming centre aims to integrate traditional yogic practices with modern scientific methods. The fitness centre will attract members with the latest trends in fitness, such as yoga, meditation, mindfulness sessions, aerobics, and other wellness activities. Apart from that, the centre will be the venue for various wellness initiatives for faculty members and will also entail daily yoga and meditation classes, as well as stress management programs. Research on holistic health practices will be an important focus, helping validate the benefits of yoga through scientific study.
Focus on Mental and Physical Well-Being
Speaking at the event, IIT Ropar Director Prof. Rajeev Ahuja said the initiative highlights the institute’s focus on overall development. “Mental health and physical well-being are essential in today’s demanding academic environment. The centre will help students and faculty achieve balance, resilience, and improved focus,” he said.
Dr Ishan Shivanand said that scientifically backed yogic practices can help students cope with stress, anxiety, and burnout. He added that the centre could serve as a model for other educational institutions across the country.
Scholarship Scheme for Underprivileged Students
IIT Ropar announced the Dr Ishan Shivanand Scholarship for Gifted Youth in conjunction with the wellness initiative. Under this scheme, 10 fully funded scholarships will be awarded every year to students from economically weaker sections. There will be five undergraduate scholarships and five graduate scholarships among them.
Supporting Talent Through Inclusive Education
Prof. Ahuja said the scholarship programme aims to ensure that talented students are not held back due to financial constraints."These scholarships will enable worthy students to fully concentrate on their academic and personal development," he stated.
With the launch of the yogic sciences centre and the scholarship programme, IIT Ropar continues to strengthen its commitment to inclusive education, student well-being, and holistic development.
