1. NMC Delays National Exit Test (NExT) by 3-4 Years: Mock Tests to Assess Feasibility Before Rollout

The National Medical Commission has announced that the much-awaited National Exit Test (NExT), which was scheduled to start in August 2025, will not be implemented immediately. Instead, the NMC plans to conduct fully funded mock tests for the next 3 to 4 years to assess the exam’s feasibility and gather feedback from students and medical institutions. This decision came after discussions with the Federation of All India Medical Association, which represents medical students and resident doctors and raised concerns about the exam’s structure, timing, and impact on medical education. The NExT exam was intended to be a single qualifying exam for MBBS graduates to practice medicine and for admission to postgraduate courses, replacing the current NEET-PG and Foreign Medical Graduate Examination.

The delay aims to ensure the exam model is fair, transparent, and sustainable, addressing legal and logistical challenges before final implementation. Alongside, FAIMA also urged the NMC to focus on improving medical education standards, mental health support for students, and integrating research and soft skills training into the curriculum. This cautious approach by the NMC seeks to create a robust system that benefits medical students and professionals while ensuring high-quality healthcare education in India.

2. Kerala Halts PM SHRI School Scheme Amid Political Opposition and Forms Review Panel

The Kerala government has decided to suspend the rollout of the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme following strong objections from its coalition partner, the Communist Party of India (CPI). In response, Kerala's Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced the formation of a seven-member cabinet sub-committee, chaired by Education Minister V. Sivankutty, to review the scheme thoroughly before any further implementation.

This decision came only days after Kerala signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Union government to secure crucial funding under the scheme and to release dues under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).
