Due​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ to the escalating situation of the Cyclone Montha in the Bay of Bengal, schools and colleges in numerous areas of southern and eastern India have been closed this week. Following the weather warnings given by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) about heavy rain and strong winds, the governments of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha have declared holidays as a preventive measure in educational ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌institutions. The​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ IMD has forecasted that the winds will be between 90 and 100 kmph and that gusts may reach up to 110 kmph. It has also predicted heavy to very heavy rains over the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and some parts of ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌Telangana.

Tamil​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Nadu: Schools Closed in Chennai and Tiruvallur

In the state of Tamil Nadu, the district authorities in both Chennai and Tiruvallur have announced a school holiday on October 28 for all the schools. This decision was based on the weather advisories issued by the India Meteorological Department, which forecasted heavy rains due to the Cyclone approaching the coast. Officials have confirmed that the action was taken as a preventive measure to keep the students and staff out of harm’s ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌way.

Andhra​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Pradesh: Week-long holiday from October 27 to 31

Due to the developing bad weather, all the schools, colleges, and educational institutions in Andhra Pradesh will be closed from October 27 to 31, 2025. The district areas of Kakinada, East Godavari, Konaseema, Eluru, and West Godavari are among those that have been put on a very high alert level. It is planned that the evacuations will be carried out in the areas along the coast where the strong winds and heavy rainfall are anticipated. 

The Kakinada administration has communicated that schools will be closed throughout the week. At present, the Konaseema and Eluru districts have only announced October 27 and 28 as holidays and will decide on the following days after receiving further weather updates.

Cyclone​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Montha Expected to Get More Powerful

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that Cyclone Montha will escalate into a severe cyclone by October 28. The coasts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and the northern parts of Tamil Nadu are expected to experience strong winds, high tides, and heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours.

Authorities from the three states have collectively advised school children and their parents to remain updated with the local school authorities and the district administrations for information on reopening dates.

The decision to make further announcements will be based on the condition of the cyclone and new safety guidelines given by the ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌IMD.
