The Supreme Court of India has announced that the NEET PG 2025 exam will be conducted in a single session instead of two shifts. The exam is scheduled for 15 June 2025 and will take place nationwide. The SC took this significant decision to ensure fairness and transparency for all candidates.
Supreme Court’s Ruling on Single-Shift Examination
A three-judge bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath, along with Justices Sanjay Kumar and N.V. Anjaria, passed the order on 30 May 2025, following petitions challenging the National Board of Examinations' decision to conduct the exam in two shifts. The bench highlighted that conducting the NEET PG exam in two shifts leads to subjectivity and compromises the principle of equality among candidates. Also, they mentioned that no two question papers can be guaranteed to have the same level of difficulty or ease, which may unfairly advantage or disadvantage certain candidates.
The Court rejected the NBE’s argument that there were insufficient examination centers to hold the exam in a single shift. It observed that India’s technological advancements and the availability of multiple centers across the country should enable the NBE to accommodate all candidates in one session. The Court also states that there was sufficient time before the exam date to make necessary logistical arrangements.
