IIT Kharagpur Admission Process Overview
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, offers several academic programs at undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), and doctoral (PhD) levels. Admission procedures for each program offered at IIT Kharagpur are different. Admission to UG programs like B.Tech, Dual Degree, and B.Arch is through JEE Advanced, which is followed by qualification in JEE Main. IIT Kharagpur UG Admissions Process
Undergraduate admissions at IIT Kharagpur are held through the JEE Advanced examination, which comes after qualification in JEE Main. Candidates must have passed their 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics to be eligible. After JEE Advanced, students go for the JoSAA counselling process to get a seat in B.Tech, Dual Degree, and B.Arch courses. The entire cycle usually starts in October with the JEE Main registration, the exams take place in January and April. The JEE Advanced exam occurs in May, and counselling happens in June-July. Go to the official JEE Main website https://jeemain.nta.nic.in/ and access the link "Fill the Application form". Do the form filling process, upload the document for the JEE Main Application, and pay the Application fee through the online payment mode.
Appear for the examination (generally in January and April)

IIT Kharagpur PG Admissions Process
Postgraduate admission at IIT Kharagpur is available for M.Tech, MBA, M.Sc, and LL.M courses. M.Tech and M.Sc students have to clear GATE and JAM, respectively. Candidates for an MBA course are chosen on the basis of their CAT scores and an interview. LL.M admissions are based on the cutoff of the candidates in the entrance test conducted by the institute.
The PG application forms open most of the time between January and March, and the final selections are made by July. Admission is on the basis of merit, and candidates must fulfil the eligibility criteria of the department. The institute also has PG interdisciplinary programs, some of which require an institute-level entrance test and an interview. The detailed admission process for various courses is mentioned below.
M.Tech/Joint M.Tech/MCP-PhD
Step 1- First, the candidates are required to qualify for the GATE exam, which is conducted every year by one of the IITs.
Step 2- After qualifying for the GATE, one must register on the COAP portal to receive seat offers.
Step 3- Students can submit an online application through the M.Tech admission portal of IIT Kharagpur.
Step 4- After completing the registration process, they should complete the process by uploading the documents and paying the application fee.
Step 5- After paying the necessary fees, attend the counselling and seat acceptance process.
MCP (City Planning)
Step 1- Qualify GATE in Architecture or Planning
One of the conditions is that a candidate should take GATE in any one of the related papers, e.g. Architecture and Planning. Without a valid GATE score, candidates will not be allowed to proceed to the next level.
Step 2- Apply via IIT Kharagpur’s MCP Admission Portal
Head to the official PG admission portal of IIT Kharagpur during the application window (generally March-April).
After creating an account, you will be required to input your personal and academic details and select the MCP program. The transaction of the application fee must be done online.
Step 3- Upload Required Documents
Provide the scanned documents of:
B.Arch/B. Plan a degree certificate or a provisional certificate
GATE scorecard
Mark sheets of all semesters
Category certificate (if applicable)
Photograph of passport-size and signature

Step 4- Selection Process

Step 1: Take CAT
Applicants are expected to take the Common Admission Test (CAT) which is organised by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).
The holding of a valid CAT score is a must for eligibility.

Online, through the PGDBA portal, which is a collaborative work of IIM Calcutta, IIT Kharagpur, and ISI Kolkata, you can put in your application. Along with your academic records, also pay the application fee.
Step 2- Take PGDBA Entrance Exam
Participate in the test, which is to measure quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, data interpretation, and verbal ability.
Step 3- Exam Score-Based Shortlisting
A list of candidates for the subsequent round is prepared based on their entrance exam scores.
Step 4- Interview Round

IIT Kharagpur PhD Admission Process
PhD admission at IIT Kharagpur is done through an online application and then the candidate has to appear for a written test and interview. Besides minimum qualifying marks, the candidate should possess a relevant master's degree. If a candidate has a valid GATE, NET, or some other national fellowship, then that candidate may be exempted from the written test. The institute releases the application form twice a year, generally in April-May and October-November. The selection is done based on the academic performance, research proposal, and personal interview. The final admission will depend on the approval of the department and the institute. Step I: Complete the Online Application Form
This can be done firstly by creating an account with the email ID and then logging in. Provide details that are required and make sure they are correct. In order to authenticate your details, upload your academic testimonials, a recent passport-sized photo, and your signature.

During the year 2024, the entry and exit B.Tech ranks at IIT Kharagpur have drastically changed from one department to another. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering was the toughest one to get into, with the closing ranks being approximately 450 for the General category.
