The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati selects students through various national entrance tests for admission to its courses. For UG admission, B.Tech aspirants have to pass the JEE Advanced exam after clearing JEE Main and participate in JoSAA counselling for seat allocation. BDes candidates must clear the UCEED exam and BS admissions depend on the IISER Aptitude Test.
On the other hand, IIT Guwahati admissions for PG courses rely on GATE for M.Tech, CEED for M.Des and CAT for MBA candidates. In addition, those who want to pursue an M.Sc (Research) program require a valid GATE/NET JRF score.
After qualifying for the required entrance exam, the applicants are required to participate in the counselling process and proceed to further selection rounds including interviews or written tests based on the program. They also need to meet other academic eligibility criteria along with valid entrance scores.
Program Level | Entrance Exam(s) | Eligibility Criteria | Selection Steps |
| Undergraduate | JEE Advanced (B.Tech), UCEED (B.Des), IAT (BS) | 10+2 with relevant subjects; minimum marks; qualified exam | Counselling + Seat allotment |
| Postgraduate | GATE (M.Tech), JAM (M.Sc), CEED (M.Des), CAT (MBA) | Relevant Bachelor’s degree; minimum CPI/marks; valid exam | Entrance exam + Shortlisting + Interview (if applicable) + Admission |

The IIT Guwahati admission process is based on various national entrance exams for every program. The qualifying candidates must take the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced to get into the B.Tech program, which is the main test for the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati admission. After that, the counselling process JoSAA, based on ranks in JEE Advanced, decides the final selection.
However, the process for PG programs depends on the entrance exam connected with each discipline and varies accordingly. The basis of MSc admissions is through IIT JAM score-based admissions and M. Tech is GATE score only. Those wishing to enter the M.Des program must sit for CEED and those wanting an MBA have to take the CAT exam as well.
Moreover, applicants for the Ph.D. program must have either a valid GATE/CEED score or pass a written test and interview conducted by IIT Guwahati. To know the complete admission process, entrance exams accepted, and important dates for each UG, PG, and Ph.D. program, continue reading below. Additionally, it is important for applicants to review the detailed IIT Guwahati Fees structure to understand the financial commitment required for their chosen program.

The fellowship is directed to students who have performed very well in their studies, especially to those who have scored extraordinarily in their Master’s degrees. It includes doctoral education in fields such as engineering, medicine, agriculture, and veterinary sciences.
The candidates getting into IIT Guwahati with an INSPIRE fellowship being granted provisionally should finish the necessary paperwork within a year and get the final approval from DST to continue the fellowship. In case the final approval is not given, the candidate will have the option of continuing as a self-financed PhD student. Moreover, the scheme guarantees that there will be no changes in the supervisor, research proposal, or host institute after the granting of approval, thus preserving academic stability throughout the PhD process.
IATMLA: The Institute Assistantship Test is for MTech Level Applicants and is an offline written examination that takes place in IIT Guwahati for PhD applicants who hold an MTech, MDes, or MS (Research) degree but do not possess valid GATE or CEED scores. The exam is conducted one or two days prior to the selection interviews and lasts for 2 to 3 hours, with the exact time being decided by the respective academic division.

Then, the institute shortlists candidates based on their academic records and scores in national exams like GATE, NET, or CEED. Then all the qualified candidates give written tests and/or interviews, which can be online or offline. There is also a special test called IATMLA for candidates who don’t have GATE/CEED scores but have a Master’s degree.

Note: In the tables given above for IIT Guwahati JEE Advanced cutoff for various programs, if any opening or closing rank has a P, then it means that the corresponding rank is from the Preparatory Rank List. Meanwhile, the Preparatory Rank List is a special rank that is assigned to the candidates from the reserved categories who did not meet the general cutoff for the specific exam. However, they meet the minimum subject and aggregate score required.
The IIT Guwahati cutoff for the GATE exam is important for admission into its M.Tech programs across various engineering disciplines. These IIT Guwahati cutoffs represent the minimum qualifying scores that candidates must achieve in the GATE exam to be eligible for selection. Programs such as Computer Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, etc., require valid GATE scores meeting the institute’s cutoff criteria for admission.
