Step 1: Appearββββββββββββββββ and Qualify in JAM Exam
Candidates need to register for and appear. The JAM test is held at the national level, and the test scores are considered for admission into the M.Sc. courses in the various institutes.
Step 2: Application Submission
The qualified JAM candidates can submit their application through official website.
Step 3: Merit List Creation
The merit list shall be drawn based on the candidates' JAM scores for the allotted seats.
Step 4: Counselling and Seat Allotment
On the JOAPS portal, candidates sign in for counselling. Depending on merit and preferences, they get the offer of seats.
Step 5: Admission Offer Decision
First, candidates are required to select from three possible options: Accept and Freeze (accept the seat and do not allow any further upgrade), Accept with Upgrade (confirm the seat but still be eligible to upgrade), or Reject and Quit (decline the seat and leave the admission process).
Step 6: Seat Booking Fee Payment
Candidates who accept a seat (either Freeze or Upgrade) will be required to make the seat booking fee payment ( INR 15,000 for General/OBC/EWS; INR 7,500 for SC/ST/PwD).
Step 7: Document Verification and Admission Confirmation
Candidates are required to physically present themselves at the institute that is giving them admission, along with the necessary original documents for verification, and pay the remaining fee of the institute.
Step 8: Further Rounds
In case of seats being vacant, additional admission rounds take place, involving the same steps until all vacancies are filled.
Step 9: Offer Letter Download
On the completion of the final round, the admission letters are made available on the portal for printing by the admitted ββββββββββββββββcandidates.

To get admission in PG courses at IIT Bhubaneshwar, candidates must have an undergraduate or equivalent degree (not applicable for all) is needed for the application. IIT Bhubaneswar admission norms for PhD programs are contingent upon the candidate's academic qualifications and entrance examination results. The PhD applicants are required to have a Master's degree with a minimum of 60% of the total marks for Engineering/Technology and 55% for Humanities or a Bachelor's degree with outstanding academic records. Such candidates need to qualify in GATE, CSIR-UGC NET, JAM, or JEST.
However, those who are sponsored with work experience and NOCs can apply without these qualifications. MS by Research aspirants should hold a Master's degree in the relevant area(s) of study with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA and possess a valid GATE or CSIR-UGC NET certification. Candidates belonging to reserved categories will get relaxations. IIT Bhubaneshwar PhD eligibility requirements differ from the categories. For admission, it has 5 categories, such as institute scholar, sponsored scholar, joint MSc PhD student, staff category, and the last category is Ph.D working professional. For the engineering schools under the PhD admission, the criteria are different, such as the required degree, minimum marks or CGPA. All Engineering Schools (SECS, SIF, SMS, SMM&ME)
1. Candidates must require to hold M. Tech. or ME or any equivalent qualification with at least 60% marks of 6.5 CGPA on the scale of 10. B. Tech or BE or equivalent degree in any relevant discipline is also considered for admission with min 70% average marks (7.5 CGPA). If a candidate is applying with the second category, which is B.Tech., one must appear for the GATE examination and obtain a valid and accepted score.
2. Candidates must have at least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (10-point scale) in all exams from Class 10 onwards. A single relaxation of up to 5% is permitted in secondary/higher secondary or equivalent exams.
School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Management (SHSS&M)
1. Candidates must possess a Masterβs degree in a relevant Humanities or Social Sciences discipline, achieving a minimum of 55% marks or 6.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale.
2. They are also required to maintain at least 55% marks or 6.0 CGPA in all examinations from Class 10 onwards, with a single relaxation of up to 5% permitted in secondary, higher secondary, bachelorβs, or equivalent levels.
3. Additionally, qualification in GATE or CSIR-UGC NET (LS) in the relevant discipline is mandatory for eligibility.
School of Basic Sciences (SBS)
1. Masterβs or equivalent in a relevant discipline with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA is the main criterion for admission.
2. Minimum 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale requirement is set for admission from class 10 onwards. Candidates who have a secondary, higher secondary, bachelorβs degree, or equivalent are given up to 5% mark relaxation.
3. Minimum 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA from Class 10 onwards (single relaxation up to 5%).
4. Candidate must qualify in GATE, CSIR-UGC NET (LS), JAM, or JEST in the relevant discipline.
School of Earth, Ocean and Climate Sciences (SEOCS)
1. Candidates must hold a Masterβs degree or equivalent in the relevant discipline with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale, or a B.Tech./BE or equivalent degree with at least 70% marks or 7.5 CGPA.
2. If anyone is holding a secondary or higher secondary degree, they can be given up to 5% relaxation according to the courses and institute norms.
3. Additionally, a valid qualification in GATE, CSIR-UGC NET (LS), JAM, or JEST in the relevant discipline is mandatory for eligibility.
Note for CFTIs Students: CFTI students admitted via JEE (pursuing B.Tech, BE, Integrated M.Tech, M.Sc or 4-year programs) with β₯7 semesters completed and CGPA β₯8.0 (maintained at graduation), or M.Sc. graduates from IITs or IISc with CGPA β₯8.0, are eligible without needing GATE or CSIR-UGC NET (LS). IIT Bhubaneswar Sponsored Project
Currently working as a JRF/JRF in an IIT Bhubaneswar-sponsored project with a fellowship equivalent to an Institute PhD scholar level considered eligible for applying under this category.
The project must have at least 2 years remaining (relaxable to 6 months).
Candidates receive assistantship from the funds allocated under the personnel/manpower budget head of the project (hereafter referred to as the Project Fund), with the fellowship amount being at least equivalent to that provided to Institute Ph.D. scholars.
Additionally, the remaining period of the Project Fund within a single project, along with the remaining tenure of that same project, must be at least 2 years from the date of enrollment in the Ph.D. program during the Spring Semester as per the academic calendar (if selected).
This 2-year duration requirement for the project can be relaxed by up to 6 months upon the recommendation of the Principal Investigator (PI) and the Head.
Sponsored under AHRC
Candidates must hold an M.Tech./ME or equivalent degree in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science, Electronics and Communication Engineering, or in any Engineering discipline, with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale, and be GATE qualified in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA), Computer Science and Information Technology (CS), or Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE); alternatively, a B.Tech./BE or equivalent in specified engineering fields (including AI, Data Science, CS, Electrical, Electronics, Communication, Mechanical, Civil, Biomedical, Genetics, Agricultural, Environmental) with at least 70% marks or 7.5 CGPA, or an M.Sc. or equivalent in Mathematics, Biology, Genetics, Psychology with minimum 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA, both requiring the same GATE qualifications.
They are also required to maintain at least 60% marks (6.5 CGPA) in all examinations from Class 10 onwards. Relaxation of up to 5% permitted in secondary or higher secondary or equivalent exams.
Selected students through AHRC will be affiliated to the respective School/Department based on their allotted main supervisor, and they will receive a fellowship equivalent to that of Category-1 Institute Ph.D. scholars.
This program targets bright M.Sc. students at IIT Bhubaneswar who have completed their third semester with a CGPA β₯ 8.5, automatically shortlisting them for the Ph.D. selection test in the following Autumn semester.
Interested students must submit a declaration to join Ph.D. within two weeks of third-semester results; otherwise, they won't be considered, and tests align with regular Autumn Ph.D. admissions.
A discipline-wise cap of 10% of sanctioned strength (rounded up) applies to selections.
IIT JAM marks are also required as per the department.

Non-Teaching Staff (permanent, technical or non-technical) may join the Ph.D. program with prior No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Competent Authority.

Step 1: Academic Eligibility Criteria
In most cases, applicants are required to hold a Masterβs degree or M.Tech. degree with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (the requirement varies from one school to another).
Most of the categories require one to have a qualification such as GATE or CSIR-UGC NET, or its equivalent, except for a few categories of sponsored and staff.
Moreover, the SC/ST/PwD candidates are allowed certain specific relaxations (up to 5%).
Step 2: Apply Online
Candidates' online applications should be submitted along with detailed academic and experience documents before the last date (normally from the middle of March to the middle of April).
Applicants should upload the scanned copies of all their certificate documents. There is no need for the hard copies.
Step 3: Shortlisting
Schools, based on academic merit and meeting of the eligibility criteria, shortlist candidates.
Besides that, schools may decide to impose such additional criteria as discipline/branch and minimum marks.
Step 4: Selection Process
The decision to call an interview and/or written test is at the discretion of individual schools, and only shortlisted candidates are so notified.
Assessment of performance in a written test (only if there) will be 40% and that in an interview will be 60%, while where no written test is held, only 100% of the interview shall be taken into account.
The ultimate selection depends on the aggregate score and the cut-off levels set by schools.
Step 5: Document Verification and NOC
Candidates belonging to the staff, sponsored, and working professional categories should bring with them, at the time of admission, employer-issued No Objection Certificates (NOC) in the formats specified.
Step 6: Pay Application Fee
INR 500 for General/EWS/OBC, INR 250 for SC/ST/PwD; No fee is charged from Female candidates.
Step 7: Admission Offer
Selected candidates will get admission offers, after that they are required to follow the prescribed enrollment ββββββββββββββββformalities.
