The Indian Institute of Technology Madras held its 62nd Convocation on 11 July 2025. The event was attended by the National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, as the Chief Guest and Padma Vibhushan awardee Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam as the Guest of Honour. There were approximately 3,227 students presented with their degrees during the convocation. According to IIT Madras, they have given around 3,661 degrees to the students, which included joint and dual degrees and a total of 529 PhDs. It also included dual degrees and joint degrees with foreign institutions.
In his inspiring speech, Ajit Doval said the students were among the “most fortunate batches in the last 1,000 years.” He asked them to use their talent and knowledge to help build India’s future, rather than just seeking personal success abroad. He said India needs professionals who are innovators, leaders, and contributors to the nation’s growth. Doval urged the students to focus on self-reliance and original thinking instead of copying foreign ideas.
Director Prof. V. Kamakoti shared major achievements of the institute in the last academic year. IIT Madras reaches at 47 place in the QS World University Rankings 2026, now ranking 180th globally. The institute completed 302 sponsored research projects worth INR 318 crore and 982 consultancy projects worth INR 906 crore, including international collaborations.
The students who performed exceptionally were lauded for their performance with prizes. The President of India prize was awarded for highest GPA amongst the B.Tech students, the Bharat Ratna M Visvesvaraya Memorial Prize for highest GPA amongst the B.Tech and dual degree students, the Institute Merit Prize for highest GPA amongst dual degree students, the Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma Prize for well rounded performance in extra-curricullar B.Tech degrees and the Governor’s Prize for the well rounded extra curricullars in the dual degrees.
At the Convocation, Prof. Kamakoti who is the the director of the IIT Madras, awarded 3,227 students 3,661 degrees. Out of which 820 were BTech degrees, 312 dual degrees in B.Tech and 711degrees in M.Tech, 173 degree in M.Sc and joint M.Sc, 85 degrees in MA, 181 degrees in Executive MBA, 93 degrees in MBA, 73 in PG Diploma, 250 degrees in MS and
529 PhD degrees. These degrees include 10 joint degrees with universities in foreign countries such as France, Australia, Singapore, and Germany.
