IIT Guwahati Placement 2025: Data Science & AI School’s First BTech Cohort Attracts Top Recruiters

IIT Guwahati’s Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence has reached a major milestone. The institute graduated its first batch of BTech students in Data Science and AI this year. The program started in 2021 and was designed to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in artificial intelligence and data science.

This is the first time any IIT has offered a full-time undergraduate program focused only on these fields. The school was set up with support from the Mehta Family Foundation in the United States.

Strong Placement Results

The first batch had 22 students who were enrolled in it. Out of these, 20 students received job offers during campus placements. One student chose to pursue higher studies at Carnegie Mellon University in the US while two students opted out of the placement process. The placement rate for the batch stands at 91%, which is a strong start for a new program.

The students got jobs in several good companies that exist in India as well as other parts of the globe in different business sectors. Among the recruiters who went to the IIT Guwahati campus were Google, Microsoft, and Warner Bros Discovery. The mentioned companies provided jobs like AI Engineer, Data Scientist, and Machine Learning Developer.

The offers of the students were not limited to big companies only as they also had access to startups and multinational companies. The profile of the job was in perfect harmony with the skills imparted during the training program such as coding, data analysis, and AI model development.

Academic Highlights

The curriculum featured a year-long project component where students worked on topics like eepfake detection, large language model automation, multimodal healthcare systems, and robotics. Some of these projects have been published are under review in national/international academic conferences and journals. These students participated in a number of national competitions, including the Inter-IIT Tech Meet, Amazon ML Challenge, and Citadel Terminal. One student also completed an international internship in Japan, along with other students who had research and leadership roles in club and campus technical forums as well. The institute felt these outcomes indicated the program was interdisciplinary and application-oriented.

IIT Guwahati's Mehta Family School has a faculty team of more than 25 members and is considered to be a strong one. They have their research in healthcare AI, sustainable finance, and neuro-inspired computing, among other things. Numerous faculty members have grants from different organizations like DST, DRDO, ISRO, and the Indo-Dutch Merian Fund.

The school is fortunate to have academic and research advisors who are located abroad and contribute to its growth. They are the ones who directly or indirectly had an impact on its academic offerings and forged the collaboration with institutions like MIT, Purdue University, University of California San Diego, and University of Oklahoma, professional institutions. Such worldwide support brings depth and quality to the school’s research and learning environment.

Faculty members guided students in research areas such as neuro-inspired computing, sustainable finance, and multimodal systems. Many students published papers and presented their work at top conferences.

Future Plans

IIT Guwahati's Mehta Family School is expanding its horizon at an incredible pace, and it is already providing MTech, Ph.D., and online BSc (Hons.) programs in Data Science and AI. Recently, the school has been planning new labs and research centers to support the student’s learning and advance their projects. These developments will not only facilitate experiential learning but also enable the school to be at the forefront of research. The school has demonstrated its power with the success of its first BTech placement season. Students are landing the best positions and are exposed to the tackling of real-world issues. This is a clear indication that IIT Guwahati is all set to take the lead in the area of data science and artificial intelligence.
