The Delhi government has announced the schedule and guidelines for Nursery, KG, and Class 1 admissions for the 2026–27 academic session. The admission process will start on December 4, 2025, for all private unaided recognised schools. All schools have been instructed to strictly follow the timeline without any changes. This step continues the age-alignment process introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP), which aims to standardise entry-level education across India.
Delhi Nursery Admissions Age Eligibility
The Directorate of Education (DoE) has set clear age criteria for admissions. As of March 31, 2026, children must be between the ages of three and four to enrol in Nursery (Balvatika 1). For KG (Balvatika 2), the age should be 4 to 5 years, and for Class 1, children should be 5 to 6 years old. Children admitted to Nursery in 2025–26 will automatically move to KG, and those in KG will progress to Class 1, ensuring a smooth transition.
Delhi Nursery Admission 2026 Timeline
The Department of Education (DoE) has made the complete calendar for the application process. The initial selection list will be published on January 23rd, 2026, and the second selection list will be published on February 9th, 2026. Point System and Selection Criteria
The Distance to the School Rating is weighted the most heavily by almost all private schools. Other criteria that schools consider when evaluating applicants are the Amount of Staff (wages), Alumni Relations, and a Sibling's Connection to a School. Some minority (community) schools also consider preference for their community.
Schools are also required by The Right to Education (RTE) Act to reserve 25% of Entry-level seats for Students From Disadvantaged Categories (DG), Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Children with Disabilities (CWD). The Department of Education (DoE) monitors these admissions through its online reporting system.
Tips for Parents
Necessary documentation (for parents) will include: Birth certificate for the child, proof of address, and recently taken family photographs (child and both parents). It is also necessary for parents to read through each school’s distance/point system prior to applying and to apply before the closing date.
For ease of this process, parents must always check the School’s website and utilise the “grievance" portal as required. Applications for Nursery, KG and Class 1 will be accepted starting December 4 for the 2026-27 academic year, therefore it is important for parents to thoroughly read and understand all instructions and guidance.
