The IELTS Exam Syllabus 2025 is divided into 4 sections: Reading, Writing, Speaking  and Listening, each designed for judging the candidates’s proficiency in English in different areas and situations. Each section tests the candidate’s communication skills and thinking process.

The Listening section is designed to evaluate the candidate on the basis of a wide range of listening skills with different accents like British, American, Australian and Canadian. Other skills like a subjective understanding of main ideas, factual information, opinions and attitude is also considered. 

In the Reading section, the candidate has to attempt 3 reading comprehensions and is tested on the basis of the reading skills and inferences drawn from the passage, as well as the attention span and the eye for detail. 

Through the Writing section, a candidate is given 2 tasks in the form of letter and essay writing, and tested for persuasive written communication skills, organisation of ideas and the appropriate usage of grammar and vocabulary.

During the Speaking section you will have a personal interview with a designated examiner and based on that the candidate is judged on the basis of your verbal communication skills, fluency, expression and justification of thoughts and opinions. 

The IELTS syllabus for the IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training and IELTS UKVI is similar and is segregated into 4 sections of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking each specifically designed for judging the English language proficiency of non-native speakers. 

Reading Section

The IELTS Reading section has 40 questions that have to be attempted in 60 minutes. This section consists of 3 unseen passages with question types including multiple choice, true or false, match the following, short answer question and summary completion.

Listening Section

The Listening section also has 40 questions to be completed within 30 minutes and 10 minutes for transferring the answer. The candidate is made to listen to 4 audios with an increasing level of difficulty in different accents such as American, British, Australian and Canadian.

The speaking section is conducted in the form of a personal interview in 11-14 minutes with a certified examiner in 3 parts. The candidate is asked a series of questions and evaluated on the basis of self expression of thoughts and communication skills.

Writing Section

The Writing Section consists of 2 tasks that have to be completed within 60 minutes. The questions asked feature essay writing and letter writing. The candidate is judged on the written communication skills and the accuracy of grammar and vocabulary. The types of questions asked can vary depending on the Academic and the General Training tests.

Two writing tasks for both Academic and General Training test 

The IELTS for UKVI Life Skills test is created for meeting the immigration criteria. The candidate needs to show their speaking and listening abilities and are tested on everyday communication on topics like, personal experiences, interests and hobbies, relationships, food taste, education, weather, leisure and more.
