The IELTS Exam, also known as the International English Language Testing System, is an English language proficiency test. In India, it is administered by the British Council in association with IDP Education. It tests a candidate’s comprehension of the English language and communication skills in professional and academic settings and everyday life.
This test is mostly taken for higher education as a part of university entrances, for work opportunities and immigration purposes.
There are two modes of delivery, paper and computer-based, the computer delivery being available 7 times a week in different slots, and the paper-based test being available 48 times annually. The registration for the IELTS can be done online through the official IDP IELTS website and offline at any recognised test centre. The IELTS exam fee for both modes is INR 18,000, but it can vary as per the exam type. The IELTS exam eligibility criteria are very minimal. But a valid passport is compulsory for taking the exam. Anyone aged 16 and above can take the test with no specific academic requirements.
The IELTS exam consists of 4 sections such as Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. It is a 2-hour and 45-minute test, with the 60-minute writing section being scheduled separately. The IELTS exam marking scheme is based on the band scale of 1 to 9, with 9 being the highest and 1 being the lowest. The IELTS exams are conducted throughout the year, so an applicant can book their slot as late as a week prior to the exam.
There are two modes of giving the test, which are in the form of paper and computer delivery. There are no fixed IELTS exam dates for the computer delivery; this mode offers more availability of frequency with 7 days a week and multiple slots per day. The paper mode of delivery has a fixed number of attempts of up to 4 times a month and 48 times a year. A candidate aged 16 and above can take as many attempts as they desire.
