The IELTS exam pattern for the IELTS Academic, General Traininig and the IELTS UKVI is divided into 4 major sections, which are the Reading, Writing, Listening and the speaking. The test is conducted in a computer-based and a paper-based delivery format and consists of a total of 82 questions to be completed in 2 hour and 45 minutes. The Listening, Reading and Writing sections are conducted on the same day, the speaking section is taken section within the same day or week.
The Reading section consist of 40 questions to be attempted within 60 minutes. The Listening section also consists of 40 questions each to be attempted within 30 minutes. The Writing section has 2 tasks to be completed in 60 minutes. The Listening section is followed by a personal interview taken in 3 parts within 11 to 14 minutes.
The IELTS test is evaluated on the scale of a band score ranging from the 1 to 9. With 9 being the highest level of proficiency and 1 being the lowest level of the proficiency. There are no negative marking in the Reading and Listening sections and the evaluation of the Speaking and the Writing section depends on the candidate’s subjective performance. The overall band score is the band score is calculated as the average of other 4 section and is given either as a full or a half band score.
The IELTS exam structure is similar for the IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training, IELTS UKVI but varies for the IELTS Life Skills. The IELTS exam is designed to judge a candidate’s overall English language in different aspects of communication. On the other hand, the IELTS Life Skills test is designed for testing the speaking and listening skills of UK visa and citizenship applicants according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages standards.
