The Union Grant Commission bans courses in the healthcare field, such as psychology, biotechnology, and nutrition, from being offered in online or distance learning modes. All the colleges and universities are strictly instructed to ban all courses that come under the National Commission for AlliedandHealthcare Professions from being offered online from this year.
This decision was taken on the suggestion of the Distance Education Bureau Working Group meeting that was conducted in April 2025. This is to maintain the quality of education and training in the practice-based and professional courses. It will be implemented from the July-August session of the academic year across the higher education institutes in the country.
Programs That Are Being Banned From Online & Distance Learning Modes
Following is the list of courses that come under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) Act, 2021:
Healthcare data management and information technology
Physician Associates
Assistant roles in medical practice
Why Did UGC Ban These Healthcare Courses From Being Offered In Online Mode?
The UGC decided to ban the online and distance learning programs in the Healthcare field to maintain the quality of healthcare working professionals. As said by the head of the psychology department at Mumbai University, these healthcare programs require rigorous practical training and extensive knowledge about the subject. Offering these courses online may compromise the quality of training and human health resources. That's why the steps of banning these Healthcare Courses From Being Offered In Online Mode were taken by the UGC.
