CAT Percentile Calculation Process

The CAT exam score is represented in the form of a percentile, which is the rank of the exam taker. The calculation of the percentile depends on the marking scheme and raw score. The normalisation process takes place to adjust the difficulty level of the exam in three slots. The percentile is given by evaluating the scale score of the candidate in the three sections of the exam. 

Formula: 3,00,000−5,000 / 3,00,000×100=98.33%

For example, If the candidate has received a 3000 rank from 3 Lakh students, then the percentile is calculated by subtracting the candidate’s rank from the total number of candidates, dividing this by the total number of candidates, and then multiplying by 100. In words, this can be expressed as: Take the total number of candidates, which is three lakh, subtract the candidate’s rank of five thousand to get two hundred ninety-five thousand. Then, divide this result by the total number of candidates, three lakh, and multiply by one hundred to convert it into a percentage. This calculation results in a percentile score of 98.33, meaning the candidate scored higher than 98.33% of all those who took the exam.

CAT Exam Normalization Process

The CAT Normalization process takes place to provide equality to every candidate. Since the exam is taken in different slots and each slot can vary in difficulty level, the scores are adjusted so that no one gets an unfair advantage or disadvantage because of the particular set of questions they received. The normalization process changes your raw score into a fair, scaled score that reflects how well you did compared to everyone else, no matter which session you appeared in. 

• Calculate raw scores based on the number of correct and incorrect answers using the CAT marking scheme.

• For each exam slot and section, compute the mean (average) and standard deviation (spread) of raw scores.

• Adjust raw scores to account for differences in difficulty between slots using statistical formulas.

• Scale the adjusted scores so they fall on a common scale across all slots and sections.

• Convert the scaled scores into percentiles to show candidates' relative performance.

• Provide the final normalized scaled scores and percentiles on the CAT scorecard for fair comparison. 

What’s Next After the Results?

The CAT Exam result 2025 was published on the official website of CAT on December 24, 2025. After the CAT results are announced, the next process involves shortlisting and selection of the candidates by the IIMs and non-IIMs for other rounds of admission, which are Group Discussions, Written Ability Tests, and Personal Interviews. It is compulsory to clear these rounds, which are crucial for final selection into IIMs. 

Based on their academic background and work experience (if any), the shortlisted candidates are called for the other 3 rounds. During the Group Discussion, the candidates are tested for their communication skills, general awareness, and teamwork abilities. For the Written Ability Test, students are assessed on the grounds of critical thinking, clarity of thoughts and ideas through logical and persuasive written communication. For the final round, the Personal Interview, the candidates are judged based on their academic performance, acumen and career aspirations, and overall personality.

The IIMs make their final decision on the basis of the overall performance in all three 3 rounds of Group Discussion, Written Ability Test, and Personal Interview. As soon as the candidates clear the CAT cut off for IIM, they should start preparing for the other rounds to ensure their place in one of the top management institutes.
