For the 2025-26 academic session, National Law University and Judicial Academy Assam Guwahati Assam has opened the admission process for its PhD course. Applicants have to sit for an admission test, unless exempted (UGC NET/JRF, SLET, M.Phil., or being a judge). All applicants, including the exempted ones, have to provide a 1,000-word research proposal incorporating major points such as the research hypothesis, methodology, and literature review. Shortlisted candidates are called for an interview with the Research Committee. Once through the test, interview, and coursework, candidates are formally admitted to the PhD program.

For the one-year LLM courses in Corporate and Commercial Laws, Intellectual Property Laws, International Law, Environmental Law, Constitutional Law, and Human Rights Law, applicants have to be shortlisted based on their Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) performance.
For PhD admission, aspirants must have a Master's in Law from a recognised university with 55% marks or its equivalent CGPA, Aspirants having a Master's in other disciplines, or those who have professional experience in the form of working as a District Judge, High Court Judge, or Supreme Court Judge, can also apply.
Moreover, those who have cleared the Company Secretary or Chartered Accountants exams and want to pursue research in topics connected with law, especially in the field of public policy, are also eligible for the PhD program. The minimum requirement of 55% marks is reduced to 50% for candidates belonging to SC/ST and Differently Abled categories. Preference would be given to those who have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) or State Eligibility Test (SET).
