IIT Hyderabad Selection Process for B.Des Courses

  • Admission to B.Des requires a valid Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design (UCEED) score. Theβ€‹β€β€‹β€Œβ€β€‹β€β€Œβ€‹β€β€‹β€Œβ€β€‹β€β€Œ department also has a B.Des + M.Des Dual Degree that is a full-time, five-year programme. Eligible students for this alternative are decided upon their performance, including CGPA and portfolio, and they may receive a call by the end of their third year.

  • Moreover, the department offers a B.Des to PhD pathway, whereby students may be allowed direct conversion to a PhD programme on account of their performance and the calibre of a research proposal. The selection process is based on the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED). First, candidates with a valid CEED score are shortlisted for the Design Aptitude Test (DAT). After this, the Design Aptitude Test and the portfolio review are carried out in the next stage. Based on the performance in these two parts, a final shortlist is made for the personal interview.

Note: A Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) score is needed for a fresh applicant, but this rule is relaxed for applicants who have completed more than six months of work experience at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad), as this work period is accepted in place of the CEED requirement.

Eligibility Criteria for IIT Hyderabad Postgraduate Courses

To get admitted to postgraduate programmes at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, candidates should meet the eligibility criteria for postgraduate courses given below.

Eligibility for Master of Technology (M.Tech) - Regular

  • The applicants must have a B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) or B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) degree in a related field from a recognised institute approved by the government. 

  • Students who are in the final semester of their B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) or B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) degree can also apply for this IIT Hyderabad (Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad) course.

  • Students must also get the minimum required marks in the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) entrance exam.

  • IIT students who have a minimum 8 CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) in any field can apply for the IIT Hyderabad M.Tech (Master of Technology) course without writing the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) exam. 

Eligibility for Master of Technology (M.Tech) Self-Sponsored

  • Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree, a B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) or a B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) in any related field from a recognised institution.

  • However, GATE is optional for candidates who have a minimum 7 CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) in the Bachelor’s degree. These candidates must still appear for the written test and also attend a personal interview. 

Master of Technology (M.Tech) with Research Assistantship

  • For admission to the Master of Technology (M.Tech) with Research Assistantship at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad / IITH), a Bachelor’s degree with 50% marks is required. The minimum mark for reserved categories is 45%.

    • The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is optional for:

    • Applicants with 6 months of project work experience at IIT Hyderabad

    • Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) students from all Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) with a minimum of 8 CGPA in related subjects.

Eligibility for Master of Design (M.Des) - Regular

  • Candidates must have at least 55% marks in the qualifying examination (CEED). The minimum mark for SC (Scheduled Castes), ST (Scheduled Tribes), and PwD (Persons with Disabilities) categories is 50%.

  • A 4-year Bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution is required. This includes:

  • B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering)

  • B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology)

  • B.Arch (Bachelor of Architecture)

  • B.Des (Bachelor of Design)

  • B. Interior Design (Bachelor of Interior Design)

  • Or an equivalent degree.

Eligibility for Master of Design (M.Des) Project

  • To apply for the Master of Design (M.Des) Project programme at IIT Hyderabad (Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad), candidates must have a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, a professional programme, or any equivalent professional qualification.

  • Fresh candidates must appear for the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED). The selection will be based on the CEED score, project work, and portfolio review.

  • Candidates who have scored at least 8 CGPA in their Bachelor’s degree or have at least 6 months of project experience at IIT Hyderabad may not need to appear for the CEED exam.

Eligibility for Master of Design (M.Des) by Practice

  • For IIT Hyderabad admission to the Master of Design (M.Des) by Practice programme, candidates must have a 4-year Bachelor’s degree. 

  • After applying, candidates must appear for the Design Aptitude Test (DAT), which is followed by a personal interview and portfolio review.

Eligibility for Master of Science (M.Sc)

Eligibility Criteria for Doctoral Programmes (PhD)

The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad offers Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes in different departments and specialisations. To be eligible for admission to the PhD programmes at IIT Hyderabad, candidates must meet the specific eligibility criteria. Candidates should have a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) or Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree, or a Master of Science (M.Sc) degree in a related subject. Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Direct PhD: Candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree in one of the CS/EE/EC/AI/DS branches from any of the Centrally Funded Technological Institutes (CFTIs), with a CGPA of 9.0 and above.

Regular: Candidates must be from one of the CFTIs and score a CGPA of 8.0 and above. In this case, possessing a valid GATE score is not mandatory.
If the candidate has a CGPA of 9.0 or above, the candidate is strongly encouraged to apply under the Direct PhD category. Moreover, candidates who are not from CTFI need to appear for the GATE entrance examination. 

Biomedical Engineering (BME)

Candidates must have a Master’s degree in a related discipline. In addition, candidates need to appear for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for IIT Hyderabad admission.

Chemical Engineering (ChE)

Students must have a minimum of 2 years of research/teaching experience along with a BE/BTech/ME/MTech/MSc degree from a government-recognised institute/university in allied engineering disciplines with 60% (55% for reserved categories). A valid GATE score is not required.

Civil Engineering (CE)

Students must have a Master's in Civil/Environmental.  

Also, candidates are required to appear for the GATE entrance examination. 

Students who have completed their M.Tech from IIT Hyderabad do not need to appear for the GATE Entrance examination. 

Computer Science & Engineering (CSE)

Candidates with a B.Tech/B.E./B.S./M.Sc./MCA can apply for a PhD in CSE at IIT Hyderabad. 

Along with that, they are required to provided valid GATE CSE/EE/IT/ECE/MATH/Data Science and Artificial Intelligence/Statistics score 

Design

Candidates must have a master's degree, like an MDes/MA/MSc, with a minimum of 60% (55% SC/ST) in the final year from a well-recognised university. 

Non-MDes Students are required to appear for the CEED entrance examination and score a minimum aggregate mark, which is further followed by a portfolio/review required for shortlisting.

Electrical Engineering (EE)

Eligibility varies by stream (e.g., VLSI requires GATE in EC/IN; no GATE for IIT MTech with CGPA 8.0). 

Project-funded roles prioritise experience directly related to subject matter.

Liberal Arts (LA)

Master's in Humanities/Social Sciences + UGC-NET (preferred over GATE). 

Minimum 55% marks; interview centres on a research proposal in Development Studies or related fields.

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE)

B.Tech in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering + valid GATE. 

2+ years of work experience in manufacturing/aerospace industries.

IIT Hyderabad Dual Degree Admissions
