Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games: Chandigarh University Student-Athletes Help India Secure 39 Medals (13 Gold, 17 Silver, and 9 Bronze)
The XXIII Commonwealth Games, hosted in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23rd July to 2nd August 2026, concluded with memorable sporting moments. The event was held at four major venues across the city named as Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Emirates Arena and Scottish Event Campus. Around 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories participated in 215 medal events at Glasgow 2026. Athletes from across the Commonwealth nations competed in different sports and gave their best throughout the Games. The event proved to be a platform for athletes to showcase their talent and also brought different countries together through sport. Overall, the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games highlighted the core values of teamwork, perseverance and fair play. The athletes, their supporters and sports fans around the world also got a moment to create memorable moments.
At the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, student athletes from Chandigarh University took part and they put up with an impressive performance. The top-class student athletes from Chandigarh University played an important role in India's medal tally. Their strong performances brought pride to both the university and the country. In Weightlifting, Chandigarh University student Villuri Ajay Babua has secured a Silver medal in the men's 79 kg weight category. He lifted 149 kg in the snatch and 181 kg in the clean & jerk. At last, he finished his performance with an impressive total weight of 330 kg. His performance showed his strength, skill and competence on the international stage. Priya Ghanghas, a student of Chandigarh University gave a good performance in Boxing. She won the Gold medal in the women's 60 kg category and added another major achievement to the university's success at the Games. Through this event, both athletes have shown their talent and hard work at Glasgow 2026. Such platforms help young students to make a significant contribution to India's performance.
Australia and England were among the top-performing countries at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Australia holds first place with 171 medals, including 70 Gold, 45 silver, and 56 Bronze. Followed by England with 110 medals which include 29 Gold, 45 Silver and 36 Bronze. Canada has secured the third position with 62 medals, out of which 19 are Gold, 20 Silver and 23 Bronze. However, India finished fourth in the overall medal standings at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. India won a total of 39 medals, including 13 Gold, 17 Silver and 9 Bronze.
At last, during the closing ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, the Commonwealth Games flag and baton were formally handed over to India. Ahmedabad has also been chosen to host the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games. The event is a great opportunity for India to upgrade its sports infrastructure and help develop young talent.
