The National Law Institute University, Bhopal (NLIU) was established by the Rashtriya Vidhi Sansthan Vishwavidyalaya Adhiniyam in 1997, approved by the Madhya Pradesh State Legislature. It is also recognised by the University Grants Commission and the Bar Council of India.
India Today ranked NLIU in 3rd position amongst Educational institutions in India (2025). NLIU offers courses, such as BA LLB (Hons), B.Sc LL.B (Hons) Cyber Security, LLM with specialisations such as Intellectual Property & Business Law, Constitutional & Administrative Law, Human Rights & Criminal Law.

Candidates who want to get admission into the BA LLB (Hons)course must have passed Class 12th with a minimum of 45% marks, and also appear for the CLAT exam.
For the BSc LLB Cyber Security course, candidates must have passed Class 12th in the science stream.
To get admission into the LLM course, aspirants must have an LLB degree with at least 50% marks (45% for SC/ST).
Candidates applying for the Master of Cyber Law and Information Security should have a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with a minimum of 50% marks. Furthermore, candidates need to appear for the CLAT exam and also appear for the PI conducted by the University.
For a PhD in Intellectual Property Rights Law, candidates must have an LLM degree with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for OBC, SC, ST, and PwD) from a recognised university.

NLIU provides scholarships to meritorious students so that their study is not hampered due to a lack of finances. They do so by providing the Two Merit cum Means Scholarship, which covers a full tuition fee waiver for the entire duration of the course. In the first year of the course, this scholarship is provided to those students who secure the highest marks in CLAT.
From the second to fifth year, scholarships are given to students who secure the highest marks without repeating the NLIU examinations of the first, second, third, and fourth year. Students who want to avail this scholarship must ensure that their parents' annual income does not exceed the amount prescribed by the University from time to time.
