Inββββββββββββββββ the year 2025, the average JEE Advanced rank cutoff for B.Tech admission at IIT Kanpur was approximately 271 for highly competitive departments, such as Computer Science, and close to 7105 for other engineering branches. The Computer Science branch saw the most significant competition, where the cutoff rank was 271, thus showing how it was really tough to get into this program. The excellent IIT Kanpur placement record increases competition for admission.
Normally, the average GATE cutoff scores for M.Tech admissions are between 25 and 30 marks and depend on the different specialisations. A candidate willing to get into the MBA program at IIT Kanpur has to perform well in the CAT exam at around the 90th percentile or even ββββββββββββββββhigher. These cutoffs indicate the tough selection process at IIT Kanpur and emphasise the level that candidates need to meet to get a seat in their desired ββββββββββββββββcourse.
Theββββββββββββββββ IIT Kanpur B.Tech cutoffs for 2024 reveal the level of competition in various branches with respect to the JEE Advanced ranks. The opening and closing ranks represent the range of scores that students must have achieved to be admitted under different categories, such as OPEN (general), EWS, and OBC-NCL. In the case of top branches like Computer Science and Engineering, the ranks are extremely low, the opening rank being 120 and closing around 248 for general candidates, which is indicative of high demand.
Each reserved category, like EWS and OBC-NCL, also has a range of ranks, which are mostly higher than the general category. The closing rank for Computer Science for EWS candidates was 2849 and the OBC-NCL seats closed at 61129. This data helps aspirants to understand the rank trends and the possibility of getting admission into their desired branch at IIT ββββββββββββββββKanpur.

IIT Kanpur Admission 2026 for M.Tech mainly depends on the cutoff of the GATE exam, which changes in the diverse engineering and science sectors. Cutoff marks are the minimum GATE scores required for various categories: General, OBC-NCL/EWS, SC/ST/PwD. For Computer Science, a general category cutoff is approximately 29.2, while reserved categories have a bit lower cutoffs. Several branches, like Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering, have higher cutoffs, which indicate a competitive environment.
IIT Kanpur uses these scores as the primary criterion to shortlist candidates for admission into M. Tech course. The cutoffs for the humanities, life sciences, and engineering streams are different, but the general category cutoffs are the highest in all of them, followed by OBC/EWS and then SC/ST/PwD categories. This method gives the same number of opportunities to different ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββcategories. The given cutoff for M.Tech

Stepββββββββββββββββ 1: Check eligibility
Masterβs degree in management or a relevant Engineering discipline with marks or CPI not below the specified minimum (see note). OR
4-year Bachelorβs degree in Engineering or Science with β₯ 75% marks / 7.5 CPI and a valid GATE/CAT/GMAT score. (CFTI candidates are exempted from the GATE/CAT/GMAT requirement.) OR
Masterβs in Science/Arts/Commerce/Chartered Accountancy meeting all three conditions below:
β₯ 65% marks / 6.5 CPI in the masterβs degree
First division in the bachelorβs degree
Valid JRF / GATE / CAT / GMAT / NET or any other national-level exam qualification.
Candidates need a valid GATE mark with a graduation degree in Engineering or Science (4-year course), except in the case of students with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Science (4-year course) from the centrally funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs). The candidates with a PG degree in Science/Arts/Commerce must either have a valid GATE/CAT/GMAT score or must have qualified for JRF/NET.
Step 2: Submit application
Fill out and submit the online application with all the required details and documents. Make sure that the application is complete and eligible (only such applications are considered for shortlisting).
Step 3: Shortlisting for the written test
The PhD Admissions Committee shortlists candidates based on academic record, work experience, and the number of seats.
The institute will release a separate shortlist for each category (GN, OBC, SC, ST, DAP).
Simply meeting the eligibility criteria does not ensure that you will be shortlisted. Only those judged suitable by the committee are shortlisted for the written test.
Step 4: Written aptitude test
Shortlisted candidates are required to take a departmental written aptitude test.
After the written test, a list of shortlisted candidates will be released by the institute.
Candidates appearing in the written test will be considered for interviews.
Step 5: Personal interview
Candidates who will be selected by the written test will then be invited for an interview.
The interview panel assess research aptitude, subject knowledge, and general academic proficiency.
Step 6: Preparation of the final merit list & selection
Marks' aggregation (for those interviewed):
Written test: 40% weight
Personal interview: 60% weight
Category-wise merit lists are created separately (GN, OBC, SC, ST, DAP). The DoMS PhD admissions committee determines the cut-offs for each category. Selection offers are made based on these merit lists.
Important notes:
Stages 2, 3, and 4 (shortlisting, test, interview, and selection) for GN & OBC are handled independently of SC & ST; the two groups are not compared against each other during selection.
If at any point a candidate is found to have been misrepresenting, falsifying, or concealing relevant information, whether it is before or after admission, his/her candidature/admission will be rejected/terminated and fees will not be refunded.
The above process is specifically for DoMS, IIT Kanpur and does not include NRI/PIO/foreign ββββββββββββββββapplicants.
