The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has published a notice on the increase in available seats for the NEET UG 2025 round 2 counselling, a total of 1,134 new MBBS and BDS seats. The update comes after the conclusion of round 1 and is expected to help more students in their admission to medical courses in the country.
As per the reworked seat matrix, other than the newly added seats, there are 7,088 virtual vacancy seats and 13,501 confirmed clear vacancy seats. These are offered for candidates who wish to take admission into the MBBS, BDS and BSc Nursing courses under 15% AIQ. There are a total of 775 medical colleges participating in this round of counselling.
Why were Extra Seats Added in NEET UG 2025?
The new seats were added after the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved several new medical colleges across India and allowed some existing colleges to expand their intake. Every year, demand for medical seats is far greater than the supply. By bringing in additional seats midway through the process, MCC is trying to ensure that more deserving candidates get a fair chance this year.
For aspirants, this is no small update. The addition of over a thousand seats means that many students who were left disappointed after Round 1 or earlier allotments now stand a stronger chance of finding a place in reputed institutions.
Important Dates and Deadlines
MCC has already started the Round 2 counselling process. Students must remember the following key dates:
Choice filling and locking: Students need to lock their choices before 9 September 2025.
Seat allotment result: The results for Round 2 allotment will be declared on 12 September 2025 on the official website, mcc.nic.in.
Reporting to colleges: Candidates who are allotted a seat will have to download their allotment letter and report to the respective college within the given timeline.
These dates are non-negotiable. Missing even a single step could mean losing your chance this year, so aspirants must keep checking the official portal and stick to the schedule.
What This Means for Students
Adding over 1,100 seats at this stage is expected to ease the pressure on students. With medical education being one of the most competitive fields in India, every additional seat counts. For many, this will mean the difference between securing admission in 2025 or waiting an entire year for the next attempt.
This move also ensures that the newly approved colleges get filled from the very first academic session, avoiding wastage of resources. Students benefit, and institutions also begin their operations on a strong note.
