Calcutta University has informed its affiliated colleges that they have to hold classes during the summer vacation so that the teachers can finish the syllabus of their undergraduate courses. Even though this has surprised many college principals, the authorities have said that this move is necessary to make up for learning losses faced due to a delay in last year’s admission process.

CU Holds Vacation Classes To Make Up For The Lost Time

According to Debasis Das, the Registrar of CU, says that it is happening to make up for the deficit in the number of classes because of the delay in last year’s admission process. He also mentions, “We are leaving it for colleges to decide how to carry this forward; by online mode, physical classes, or a hybrid mode.”

This is happening because last year, the admission process for the undergraduate courses, which usually starts as soon as the class 12th state board results are out. However, the admissions started a month later because there was uncertainty about whether the process had to be conducted through a centralised portal or a decentralised way. At last, the admissions happened through the centralised portal.

The advisory has asked colleges to hold classes between May 29 and June 30. It has led the principals of different colleges to hold a meeting where they had to decide that summer internships and other processes will not be hampered by students and teachers attending the offline classes during this period.

Though many college principals are hesitant to follow the advisory, as it will be difficult to execute the order, as students have already enrolled for summer internships. However, the CU registrar affirms that the decision to adjust the academic schedule has been made with students’ best interest in mind. Because of the delays in the admission process and limited access to class, there has been a learning gap, which can be addressed through these classes.
