A revolutionary announcement came from Kerala’s State Education minister V Sivankuttyon wednesday via facebook post. For reading activities the Kerala Government is planning to award grace marks to the students from the next academic year. This is a very peculiar step towards inculcating reading habits in the students from a small age only. There would be dedicated reading sessions for students, encouraging a lifelong love for books and newspapers in them.
The state-run schools of Kerala are to implement reading sessions for the school students of all classes. Special incentives would be rewarded for the students who develop strong reading habits, starting next academic year. Classes 1 to 4 will focus on age-appropriate reading exercises, while students from Classes 5 to 12 will engage in newspaper-based activities and related follow-up tasks.
The teachers would be undergoing a special training and will be provided a handbook too, so that they can judge the students and help them if needed. The Education Department is also considering the possibility of adding a reading-centric category to Kerala’s annual school arts festival, “Kalolsavam.”
