According to CBSE, it is now mandatory for students to get their APAAR ID and submit it along with the other required documents while registering for board exams. The Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry, or APAAR is a 12-digit ID that every student who will be appearing for the CBSE 2026 exam must have. The APAAR ID will be unique for every student and will remain the same throughout the student’s journey from class 9 to class 12.

This decision aligns with the NEP 2020, with the aim of One Nation and One Student ID. This will help keep the student’s entire academic record and help avoid any discrepancies. The idea to link APAAR ID to board exam registration was discussed during the CBSE Governing Body meeting in June. Currently, schools send a list of candidates appearing for Class 10 and 12 board exams. This is done alongside registration details for students in Classes 9 and 11.

Why Does CBSE Want APAAR ID Linked?

The absence of a standardized identity system for records results in data inaccuracies and difficulty in verifying records, such as report cards and results, across databases. Through this APAAR ID, each student will be provided with a lifelong, universally accessible digital academic record. It will also help to streamline data management and enhance transparency in the education system. The linkage of APAAR ID with student registration will begin in time for the 2026 CBSE board exams. The proposal for APAAR ID received unanimous agreement from committee members. The chairperson emphasized that compulsory APAAR ID attachment will help improve data accuracy and eliminate duplicate records.

How To Get An APAAR ID Issued?

To create an APAAR ID, parents or students must provide information such as date of birth, gender, photograph, Aadhaar number, name, and age. This data is subsequently verified through Aadhaar authentication. While APAAR ID registration was initially voluntary, it has now been made mandatory for board exam registration. Follow the steps given below for the guide on how to create an APAAR ID through DigiLocker:

Step 1- Visit the official website at digilocker.gov.in or download the app on your mobile phone.

Step 2- For new users, click on "Sign Up" or "Register" and fill in the required details.

Step 3- Access the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) service section.

Step 4- Submit the personal, academic and other required information

Step 5- Submit the form for processing and the APAAR ID will be generated.

Step 6- Access the APAAR ID in the issued document section of the DigiLocker account.

Some people are concerned about the misuse or leakage of personal information. The government has ensured that such information would only be accessed by those engaged in educational activities, including scholarship programs, educational institutions, etc.
