As the registration for the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET PG) 2026 has been delayed, medical graduates preparing for admissions in postgraduate programmes like MD, MS, and DNB, and more, are concerned whether the National Exit Test (NExT) will replace the NEET PG entrance exam this year. The uncertainty has led to widespread discussions among MBBS students, doctors, and medical education experts.

For months, aspirants have been waiting for an official update regarding the NEET PG 2026 application process and examination schedule. This delay has fueled speculation among the aspirants about possible changes to the NExT, a proposed exam that is expected to serve as both a licensure test for MBBS graduates and an entrance exam for postgraduate medical courses.

In this respect, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has clarified that NExT will not replace NEET PG 2026 and candidates seeking admission in the medical postgraduate programmes are required to appear for the NEET PG 2026 for admission in government universities, while the implementation of NExT has been deferred for the time being. 

NExT Will Not Replace NEET PG in 2026

As per the latest updates by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the NExT will not replace NEET PG. Candidates who want to get selected for the different medical courses offered by government universities need to appear for the NEET PG entrance examination. Hence, candidates will continue to get admissions in the PG courses through performance in the NEET PG entrance exam 2026. This means candidates can continue with their performance for the NEET PG 2026 entrance exam. 

Why has NExT been deferred? 

The National Exit Test, commonly known as NExT, is a single exam that serves for multiple purposes. NExT is expected to serve as a licensing exam for MBBS graduates, a screening test for foreign medical graduates, and a ranking exam for postgraduate medical admissions. The adoption of NExT will result in the replacement of national-level entrance exams, which are NEET PG and FMG. For the current year, NExT has been deferred by the official authorities, because of the following reasons.

• The academic infrastructure for the exam is not ready yet. 

• Concerns raised by Stakeholders regarding the new examination structure.

• Curriculum and assessment changes. 

• Transition in the current exam pattern
